🐛 Describe the bug

Problem

Hello! I want to report a bug for buildkite/fastcheck/pr/metrics-tracing-test.

When proceeding with PR #6926 , unlike the previous PR, an ValueError occurred in the metrics-tracing-test.

[2024-08-02T04:09:43Z]     def __post_init__(self):
[2024-08-02T04:09:43Z] if not is_otel_installed() and self.otlp_traces_endpoint is not None:
[2024-08-02T04:09:43Z] > raise ValueError("OpenTelemetry packages must be installed before "
[2024-08-02T04:09:43Z]                              "configuring 'otlp_traces_endpoint'")
[2024-08-02T04:09:43Z] E ValueError: OpenTelemetry packages must be installed before configuring 'otlp_traces_endpoint'
[2024-08-02T04:09:43Z]
[2024-08-02T04:09:43Z] /usr/local/lib/python3.10/dist-packages/vllm/config.py:1588: ValueError

I traced the error and reproduced it in my local working space using the following command:

./venv/bin/pytest ./tests/tracing/test_tracing.py
>> FAILED tests/tracing/test_tracing.py::test_traces - ValueError: OpenTelemetry packages must be installed before configuring 'otlp_traces_endpoint'

After brief debugging, we identified that the cause of the issue originated from importing the opentelemetry in vllm/tracing.py.

Solution

🤔 I suggest that the code in vllm/tracing.py needs to be changed as follows for it to work correctly:

From this

from opentelemetry.semconv.ai import SpanAttributes as BaseSpanAttributes

To this

# "semconv.ai" -> `semconv_ai`
from opentelemetry.semconv_ai import SpanAttributes as BaseSpanAttributes

After modification, the result should be showed as follows:

tests/tracing/test_tracing.py .                                                                                                                                      [100%]

Also, could you please check if similar metrics-tracing-test bug reports have been submitted by others in the latest vLLM? (like #6999 ?)

Hi, can you submit a separate pr to fix this? I can help review and merge, thanks.

Hello @youkaichao ! I've just submitted a separate PR #7065.

I forgot that submitting a separate PR would make code review more efficient for the vLLM managers. 🙇
