I added these lines to my /boot/config.txt:

dtoverlay=rotary-encoder,pin_a=5,pin_b=6,encoding=binary,relative_axis=1
dtoverlay=gpio-key,gpio=0,label=playpause,keycode=32

When I boot, I no longer see the soundcard in the mixers.
