Smart quotes produce weird spacing (Windows 8.1, Chrome 84.0)

i solved this on my blog by adding the following line under kramdown in _config.yml
smart_quotes: ["apos", "apos", "quot", "quot"]

Yes, I know how to fix it. This issue is about default behavior
