Backspace deletion has become basically unusable in v18.1 #530

Hmmm, thanks @i0ntempest. It's a tricky one as it's a feature I've never used, not once, and I'm surprised anyone does. But I'm open to finding a solution. Can you please use a doodle tool like https://excalidraw.com/ to figure out the UX of a solution? As I'm not sure hovering would work, as it could be easily accidentally triggered when trying to mouse over the bottom browser. |

Good point. In that case I think you could just use the first backspace hit to expand the URL, and use mouse hovering for the temporary popup like right now. In my use case the URLs with tracking generally come from WeChat and Baidu, because they want every bit of your data for fingerprinting. |

Or, maybe we could let the first mouse click on the URL bar (rather than just hovering) expand it? |

@i0ntempest I'm thinking of removing the backspace functionality completely, in favour of automatic URL cleaning using this package: https://github.com/DrKain/tidy-url What do you reckon? Or do you know of any other URL cleaners? |

@will-stone Damn I’ve no idea such thing existed. If it does a decent job at cleaning URLs then certainly. I’ll try a bit with the URLs I have and get back to you. |

In v18.1 where the URL bar no longer shows the full URL, using backspace to manipulate URLs has become a pain since I cannot preview URL in real time. I use this feature a lot since I come into a lot of URLs with tracking stuff at the end. I have always thought the URL bar showing the full URL is an integral part of a utility like this, and v18.1 has destroyed a very useful feature.
If I were to propose a solution, it would be letting the URL bar expand and show the full URL on mouse cursor contact (and/or on the first backspace hit), then subsequent backspace hits just deletes bits like before.
