Not sure what is involved in this, but it seem to me this would be the first thing that conflict with the user expected terminal experience...

I second this. I originally made this with a slightly different purpose in mind, but it shouldn't be too difficult to make the user input in the terminal area directly. If I recall correctly, xterm.js handles things one keystroke at a time, so we can just forward each keystroke to the backend.

I can take a stab at this and get it done in a few days.
