Using JuliaGraphics/Cairo.jl#357 I am able to get the fonts from MathTeXEngine directly and to produce the following

However, I do not understand why the line is incorrectly placed, it seems like everything is fine.

Great! This is awaiting progress on the PR at Cairo.jl, I assume...? Cairo.jl maintenance looks to have paused - this year at least.

Yes, but I also want to make sure everything is working downstream (i.e. here) before finalizing the Cairo PR.

Well I am also trying to figure why there is so much space between the core and the exponents, but I doubt it has anything to do with Cairo.

Yes the paths option places a path rather than draws text, to allow for animation, etc.
