Workflow to operate US LP Tutor study station

Before the participant arrives:

  1. Prepare the phantom first. The first model: PH02M01
  2. Turn on the Ultrasound machine and start UltraSonix software (Start Menu)
  3. Open Plus Server Launcher on the US machine (Start Menu, version: Plus 2.5.0.2017-05-16)
    1. D:/LumbarTutor/LumbarTutor/Config
    2. Device Set: Ultrasonix L14-5 Ascenson
    3. Check if EM Sensors are in order: Transducer 1.: Probe (never unplug this), Transducer 2.: Reference, Sensor 1: Needle.
  4. Set parameters on US machine: Reject: 10, Gain: 75-90%, Frequency: 6.6M
  5. Open Plus Server Launcher on the computer
    1. C:/Users/Perklab/Documents/LumbarTutor/Config
    2. Device Set: Webcam Broadcasting
  6. Open Slicer 4.7.0 – 2017-05-24 on the computer
    1. Training Module – US Needle Tutor should start automatically
    2. Select Configuration: “Default” for the PT group, “No 3D guidance” for the Control group
    3. Change IP address to: 192.168.0.101
    4. Start Needle Tutor
    5. Select Spine Model:
      1. Spine Model H02 for Practice 1
      2. Spine Model D01 for Practice 2
      3. Spine Model D03 for Final test
  7. Needle Calibration: complete pivot and spin calibration. The error for pivot calibration should be less than 0.5 mm.

When the participant arrives:
  1. Ask them if they watched the introductory presentation.
  2. Ask them if they have any question about the procedure or the study.
  3. Ask them to fill out the first part of the survey.
  4. Let them know which group they are (PT or Control) Remind the participants that no matter in which group she was selected, she will have access only for the U/S guidance during testing.
  5. Practice 1. Start the training on the first model. You might need to do hold the phantom in a stable position. The participants have 10 minutes for the first training. It can be finished earlier if the CSF flow occurs and the participant agrees.
  6. Practice 2. Change the spine model in the phantom. The second model is: PD01M01. Every time you change the model, you need to select the correct spine model in the LP Tutor!
  7. Don’t forget to fill the phantom with water and leave the valve open.
  8. Remind the participant that this is a very hard case, no need to be stressed and if the needle hit a bony structure pull the needle back, and try in a different direction. Do not force the needle. Again the outcome is getting the CSF Flow.
  9. Change the spine model in the phantom for the final test the model: PD02M01.
  10. Final test with using only US – no 3D view visible! Please do not answer questions during test.
Recording:
  1. Click Start recording when participant start ultrasounding.
  2. Click Stop recording. End of procedure is when CSF flows back.
  3. Rename recordings: SubjectNumber_SpineModelNumber. You should have 3 recordings per person.
  4. Click Save all recordings.
  5. Delete all recordings

  1. Ask the participant to fill out the rest of the survey. Thank them for participation!
  2. and you are ready for the next participant.
