Overview

The challenge

Stay updated with the latest tips and insights on product management by signing up for our newsletter! The Newsletter Signup Form Component is a footer section component of a website where users who want to see more content on how to improve as a product manager can sign up for the newsletter. Users can add their email and submit the form, see a success message with their email after successfully submitting the form, and receive form validation messages if the field is left empty or the email address is not formatted correctly. Additionally, users can view the optimal layout for the interface depending on their device's screen size and see hover and focus states for all interactive elements on the page.

Users should be able to:

  • View the optimal layout for the site depending on their device's screen size
  • See hover states for all interactive elements on the page

What I learned

This project has been successful in teaching me how to validate user input the right way and change inner HTML when encountering an error as shown in the snippet mentioned below-

function ValidateEmail(inputText)
    {
        var mailformat = /^\w+([\.-]?\w+)*@\w+([\.-]?\w+)*(\.\w{2,3})+$/;
        if(inputText.value.match(mailformat))
            {
                userEmail = emailInput.value;
                initialForm.style.opacity = "0";
                setTimeout(() => {
                    initialForm.style.display = "none"
                    thankYouPage.style.display = "block"
                }, 310);
                setTimeout(() => {
                    thankYouPage.style.opacity = "1"
                }, 400);
                confirmationMessage.innerHTML = `A confirmation email has been sent to <strong style="font-weight:500; font-family: 'Roboto-Bold', serif;">${userEmail}</strong>. Please open it and click the button inside to confirm your subscription.`
                return true;
            }
        else
            {
                wrongInput.innerHTML = "Valid email required";
                emailInput.style.backgroundColor = "hsl(4, 100%, 95%)";
                emailInput.style.border = "solid 1px hsl(4, 100%, 67%)";
                emailInput.style.color = "hsl(4, 100%, 40%)"
                return false;
            }
    }

Continued development

The continuously learning journey of a programmer never ends. This project made me realize that there are many concepts that I need to work upon including fundamentals like flex-box and its properties, to more complex concepts like working with fetch and async await in javascript. These areas are some that I think I need to work more upon in the upcoming future as they highlight some of the most significant regions of web development that are important for every developer to know of.

These key points mentioned here will help me grow accountable and consistent towards improving at writing good quality code and be a successful full stack developer one day.

Useful resources

  • Harkirat Singh course notes - I have added notes of all lectures along with code and lecture insights of all weeks along with bonus lectures to help you all as much as I can.
  • My development code and notes - These are my notes that I made while working on my development skills in initial days and did these courses. Make sure to star the repository if you like it.✨💫
  • MDN documentation hover state for CSS - This is an amazing article which helped me finally understand hover states. I'd recommend it to anyone still learning this concept.
