Sorry if this isn't the place to report such an issue, but it seems that the Disable RTC checksum update on poweroff patch of OpenCore doesn't work on 10.15.4 beta (19E250c).

Weirdly enough, the logs says that the patch succeeded so I'm not sure what's wrong exactly

  • Firstly, it is just a sample, so it is not the functionality OpenCore provides.
  • Secondly, as you see "success", OpenCore applies the patch just fine.

All in all, it is out of the scope of OpenCore whether this patch has any effect on the system. Closing as invalid.

I am not opening the post again just adding information. This is not an RTC problem. It is something else. Cause I tried 10.15.3 AppleRTC.kext and it didn't fix the problem.

This is not an OpenCore problem.

It is an AppleRTC problem, but it is not a problem with AppleRTC.kext. Something from the operating system is writing to RTC, but your firmware has a checksum over the whole RTC area. There are three routes for this:

  • Patch your firmware (or fix otherwise) to permit writing to RTC (best).
  • Find the regions macOS is writing to and isolate them via RTCMemoryFixup.
  • Completely disable writing to RTC in AppleRTC.

First is best, because both 2 and 3 result in broken RTC, which results in broken macOS functioning.

I will leave this issue open, so that we do not get duplicates. Feel free to post here only when you know what areas are written to.

The same happens to me on a legacy BIOS. IIRC, when making my DSDT years ago, there was a patch on the RTC device to prevent BIOS corruption from happening. I have this patch and still my BIOS resets to default.

My motherboard is an EVGA P55 Micro with an i5-760. The same error happens on both Clover r5107 and OC 0.5.7. Tried RTCFixup with many offsets and no luck, also the macOS clock was messed up. Ended up reverting to 10.15.3 for the time being.

PS: Congrats on OpenCanopy, it looks AMAZING!

For what it's worth, I've updated to 10.15.4 stable when it came out and the issue is seemingly gone? Or at least happening but not consistently with the RTC patch enabled (without RTCMemoryFixup), so I don't know if it's a matter of luck or something else but clearly something is up..

I'll continue monitoring but I'm suspecting that maybe the 10.15.4 betas had a regression that got fixed before the retail release?

My config file (OpenCore 0.5.6) is here if that helps anybody https://github.com/eramdam/hackintosh/blob/master/EFI/OC/config.plist

Well, I tried RTCMemoryFixup with all the offsets and still got a BIOS reset on my PC.

I used rtcfx_exclude=00-FF because my reasoning was to narrow the offending offset by first enabling all, then half (00-80 and then 80-FF) and then half of that and so on. But with all offset excluded I still got my BIOS reset.

Any thoughts?

@carlitossuper1 that sounds bad. Please provide a debug log with liludump=60 -liludbgall rtcfx_exclude=00-FF (upload the created file at /var/log/Lilu_x.x.x.log to your next message). You will need debug Lilu and RTCMemoryFixup.

Did you leave RTC patch in OpenCore enabled along with the RTCMemoryFixup? Try with and without it.

@lvs1974 that sounds very strange to me, could you provide us with some details on why can this fail and what can we do to debug this?

There you go:

Lilu_1.4.2_19.4_RTC_patch_ON.txt
Lilu_1.4.2_19.4RTC_patch_OFF.txt

And here's my config.plist, too:
config.plist.txt

a bit OT:
On that config, I always get 2 messages of "Failed to parse data field of type 2". It doesn't show the line. What could it be?

vit9696 commented Apr 3, 2020

Ugh, sorry for that. RTCMemoryFixup does not respect -liludbgall, you need -rtcfxdbg boot argument too, please add it and remake the log.

OT: the config looks valid to me, the message says that some data is not correct. Most likely OC and config are incompatible.

Don't worry. Here's the log:
Lilu_1.4.2_19.4.txt

On insanelymac there's a talk about this and Hervé and others think AppleRTC is not the culprit. Something else is making calls to the RTC and messes up the checksum.

Back on OT:
I copied SampleFull.plist to config.plist from the compiled Docs folder. Just edited the things I needed with Atom (Xcode messed up previous attempts). I don't understand why I have those parse errors.

rtc: @ rtc read failure 1 bytes from 180 E00002C2

This means that you have only 128 bytes of RTC memory available. Usually this means incorrect definition of RTC device in ACPI. Did you apply any special changes trying to fix the reboots?

Hmmm, if you do not boot macOS and restart from OpenCore menu does that happen? If you enable FV2 and restart from the login screen, does that happen? If you early reboot during kernel loading does that happen?

I applied a fix for my RTC device many years ago. Here it is my RTC:
Device (RTC) { Name (_HID, EisaId ("PNP0B00")) // _HID: Hardware ID Name (_CRS, ResourceTemplate () // _CRS: Current Resource Settings { IO (Decode16, 0x0070, // Range Minimum 0x0070, // Range Maximum 0x00, // Alignment 0x02, // Length ) }) }

The original had IRQNoFlags. I just removed that.

if you do not boot macOS and restart from OpenCore menu does that happen?

No. I can reboot from OC menu. Also, I can boot just fine 10.15.3 and every version prior. It's 10.15.4 that screws my CMOS.

if you do not boot macOS and restart from OpenCore menu does that happen?

I don't know how to enable it (on the OpenCore side). I never bothered.

If you early reboot during kernel loading does that happen?

I could try. When it's the kernel loading? Just when the progress bar appears or before?

EDIT: The bios resets even when rebooting 10.15.4 just after the kernel loads (the usb devices turn on and the progress bar just appears)

@carlitossuper1: Any DSDT RTC fixes or patches should be removed if you emulate all 256 bytes RTC.
@vit9696: RTCMemoryFixup overrides virtual methods only in provider IOACPIPlatformDevice.
Probably there are more ways to read/write RTC in macos? Like Lilu does, for example.
PS: RTCMemoryFixup does not log any reads/writes to RTC, but there are commented lines in code.

@vit9696 I fixed mine.

RTCMemoryFixup.kext
boot-arg= rtcfx_exclude=00-FF, 00-80
This ranges works, checksum patch needs, 10 restarts works, 10 times shutdown works but when you shut down and open 30 min later doesn't work.)

No more F1 Safe Mode on startup.

Any DSDT RTC fixes or patches should be removed if you emulate all 256 bytes RTC.

So @lvs1974, what should I do? Delete the whole RTC device from my DSDT or restore it as it was with IRQNoFlags lines?

boot-arg= rtcfx_exclude=00-FF

@telepati I suggest you trying next 00-80 (offsets 0 to 128) and then 80-FF (128 to 255) to narrow down the offset. Then repeat the procedure by only excluding half the offsets and then half of it until you get the proper range that is the one that resets your CMOS.

Those offsets are needed so, you don't want to exclude all of them.

Right, it makes sense to me now, although it is not obvious like at all. Your firmware has some signaling flag in 0x5x range. It might be a bit tiring, but you could check the whole range from 50 to 5F? No need for logs, just let me know when writing 96 causes a reset.

I'm offering observations from my old Intel Series 5 chipset MB (Clover r5112 Legacy BIOS) in case this helps. The sudo nvram wake-failure=%00%00%00%00%00 command effectively resolves the BIOS reset problem for me ONLY when my RTC length is 2 (DSDT). If I change RTC length to 4 or 8, rtcread works (does not return an error), but my BIOS resets despite the presence of the wake-failure value in NVRAM. Further, with RTC length 4 or 8, my CMOS/BIOS resets if I revert to boot.efi from 10.15.3.

It appears that my system "works" only with RTC length 2. I'm only reporting in case this helps. I am fine with RTC length 2 and command sudo nvram wake-failure=%00%00%00%00%00

vit9696 commented Apr 18, 2020

@TonyC5 that's obvious, because you still need to protect RTC within the OS.

OpenCore from master implements AppleRtcRam protocol, which allows you to exclude the areas by e.g. specifying <58 59> bytes. Soon this setting will also be handled by RTCMemoryFixup.

@vit9696 Could you confirm what the proper way of fixing the issue is?
Which of the below items should we be using and what should we be reverting to default?

  • 7C436110-AB2A-4BBB-A880-FE41995C9F82:wake-failure NVRAM variable
  • __ZN8AppleRTC18setupDateTimeAlarmEPK11RTCDateTime in Kernel/Patch section of OpenCore config
  • AppleRtcRam in UEFI/Protocols section of Opencore config, specifying 0x58 (or whatever the problematic range ends up being) for 4D1FDA02-38C7-4A6A-9CC6-4BCCA8B30102:rtc-blacklist NVRAM variable as data array
  • RTCMemoryFixup kext: use or not? (guessing no need due to AppleRtcRam - is the kext going to be for Clover users?)

Thanks again

@albertofustinoni

The correct approach is to have:

  • AppleRtcRam as false (since you do not have this protocol to override), and <58 59> in 4D1FDA02-38C7-4A6A-9CC6-4BCCA8B30102:rtc-blacklist (since it is better to kill both bytes of the checksum to avoid confusion) for boot.efi. For other firmwares it may obviously be not just these two bytes.
  • DisableRtcChecksum kernel quirk or RTCMemoryFixup configured to exclude <58 59> and any other bytes if necessary (we expect to add support for reading its configuration from NVRAM) for kernelspace.

Clover users go home of course, we do not care.

@vit9696 Forgive me for being thick, but I want to ask: why are we supposed to set AppleRtcRam in UEFI/Protocols as false? Is it because a non Apple PC does not have it in the firmware and OpenCore takes over automatically? Especially since @crushers has it enabled in the config he posted.

Also, I understand neither AppleRtcRam nor the DisableRtcChecksum kernel quirk are in the current (0.5.7) release. Hopefully they are in time for the next one?

Finally, is the final fix with AppleRtcRam implemented in OpenCore going to "result in broken RTC, which results in broken macOS functioning" as you said (but at least mask the symptoms) or is it going to allow the OS to work as intended?

Thanks again

You can set them to true, but it will make little sense. Protocols are basically ProtocolOverrides. Maybe we should rename this actually for better understanding. Thanks for the reminder.

Yes, everything we talked here is already in 0.5.8. It should not break macOS to our understanding, although it is not perfect of course.

May I ask what is best practice when I moving from 0.5.7 to 0.5.8 and using wake-failure=%00%00%00%00%00 with rtc fixup patch?
Can I delete wake-failure?

@vit9696

vit9696 commented May 4, 2020

Yes, you can delete this and use rtc-blacklist variable instead (optionally with DisableRtcChecksum). If you have WriteFlash enabled (and I believe you likely do as it is recommended) you should also run nvram reset after removing wake-failure from your config or remove it manually with nvram command in macOS.

Hi @vit9696 ,

I created a post about this on InsanelyMac: HERE

I and probably others too have collected some history in our configs related to RTC / F1 POST endeavours. Probably some/most may have become obsolete these days. Based on post 👆 I see I should remove the wake-failure item from NVRAM, but there is more.
I can always go the trial and error route, but I may encounter side-effects I am unaware of.

Can I kindly ask you to have a peek?

Thank you very much in advance!

Isn’t it literally just the addresses you want to exclude, in hex, so for 0x58 and 0x59 it becomes 0x5859? Then since this is a plist data entry, convert it to base64.

@gaid2010 If you have XCode, do it in XCode. If you don't, ProperTree should have a binary data thing; just put such a data value under the dictionary of the structure in #765 (comment). If you still don't have that, in XML plist format it should read like:

<!-- this dict should be under dict NVRAM, key Add -->
<dict>
  <key>4D1FDA02-38C7-4A6A-9CC6-4BCCA8B30102</key>
  <dict>
    <key>rtc-blacklist</key>
    <data>WFk=</data>
  </dict>
</dict>

If you have a Unix (incl. mac) shell, you get base64 by running:

printf '\x58\x59' | base64

@vit9696 I've occasionally a CMOS reset.
It's just kind of annoying since my system won't POST when it switches back to PCIe 4.0 which does not work over riser cables and I have to switch out the GPU to set it back.

As it only happens from time to time (once a week or so but I could not really find a pattern to it), I cannot do the usual exclude and retest pattern.

I've attached the RTC dump from my ASRock X570 ITX/TB3 board:
rtc_dump.txt

(The RTC is also defined with a length of 2)
