Things to check first

  • I have searched the existing issues and didn't find my bug already reported there

  • I have checked that my bug is still present in the latest release

Typeguard version

4.0.0rc4

Python version

python 3.8.15

What happened?

This repo is remarkable, thanks a lot!
I use pytest-6.2.5, and when I used pytest to test a python code embedded with typechecked ( I didn't use the pytest plugin), it failed like this:

Updating pytest to the newest version could solve this problem, but it would result in conflicts with my other dependencies. Is there a way to avoild this problem and keep my pytest version?

How can we reproduce the bug?

pip install pytest==6.2.5 and pytest any program embedded with @TypeChecked

I'm not really keen on supporting older versions of libraries. Could you describe the version conflict you're seeing?

I have the same issue; typeguard imports pytest's Config module, which is introduced in pytest 7.0.0.

The problem seems that the _pytest_plugin.py module is installed even though we inherit the typeguard dependency via e.g. inflect==7.2.1. We can work around it by artificially requiring inflect==7.0.0 (sorry that the version number coincides with the pytest one).

https://github.com/agronholm/typeguard/blob/4.2.1/pyproject.toml#L42:

[project.optional-dependencies]
test = [
    "coverage[toml] >= 7",
    "pytest >= 7",
    'mypy >= 1.2.0; python_implementation != "PyPy"',
]
doc = [
    "packaging",
    "Sphinx >= 7",
    "sphinx-autodoc-typehints >= 1.2.0",
    "sphinx-rtd-theme >= 1.3.0",
]

[project.entry-points]
pytest11 = {typeguard = "typeguard._pytest_plugin"}

I don't know how yet, but if the entry-point is enabled, the requirement to have pytest>=7.0 should be enforced.

Perhaps there is a best practice for this?

Also, if you don't need the typeguard plugin, you could just disable the plugin via pytest's configuration or -p no:typeguard.

Ok, I got some advice on this, and looking at pytest.__version__ should be an acceptable solution.

Thanks! Do you mean, doing a conditional import? Or disabling the plugin alltogether?

Also, if you don't need the typeguard plugin, you could just disable the plugin via pytest's configuration or -p no:typeguard.

I did try this out. However, the plugin is still loaded, so the import failure doesn't disappear.
