In addition, the following steps are required:
cd /usr/share/hassio/homeassistant/
(or whereveer your /config directory is located)
mkdir -p www/community/themes/ios-themes
cp themes/ios-themes/*.jpg www/community/themes/ios-themes

I manually checked out this branch, and I can confirm it fixes the issue with the background file missing from the path. In my case, homekit-bg-blue-red.jpg:

 /hacsfiles/themes/ios-themes/homekit-bg-blue-red.jpg

Important

In Home Assistant, devices navigate to config directory (where configuration.yaml is located) and do the following (copy over the background images):

mkdir -p www/community/themes/ios-themes
cp themes/ios-themes/*.jpg www/community/themes/ios-themes

Anyway the PR #70 should address the issue with the copying over the files.
