On the error page for "This site can't be reached", the "details" button is misleadingly named and should be "advice" or "guidance". On the rare occasions I see it in development, I click it hoping to see nslookups, pings, traceroutes, or even http headers that would actually be details, but there's nothing other than the same old disappointing advice about troubleshooting things to try for the un-initiated.
Steps to Reproduce
pick a site name that doesn't exist.
type it into the address bar.
hit enter
click on details
wail
gnash teeth
Actual result:
Check your Internet connection
Check any cables and reboot any routers, modems, or other network devices you may be using.
Allow Brave to access the network in your firewall or antivirus settings.
If it is already listed as a program allowed to access the network, try removing it from the list and adding it again.
If you use a proxy server…
Check your proxy settings or contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working. If you don't believe you should be using a proxy server: Go to the Brave menu > Settings > Show advanced settings… > Change proxy settings… > LAN Settings and deselect the "Use a proxy server for your LAN" checkbox.
Expected result:
nslookups, pings, traceroutes, http headers, all the details that lead the browser to conclude that a site can't be reached.
Reproduces how often:
Designed to mislead and obfuscate
Desktop Brave version:
Brave 1.30.89 Chromium: 94.0.4606.81 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Revision 5a03c5f1033171d5ee1671d219a59e29cf75e054-refs/branch-heads/4606@{#1320}
OS Windows 10 Version 20H2 (Build 19042.1288)
Version/Channel Information:
Can you reproduce this issue with the current release? yes
Can you reproduce this issue with the beta channel? not used
Can you reproduce this issue with the nightly channel? not used
Other Additional Information:
Does the issue resolve itself when disabling Brave Shields? no
Does the issue resolve itself when disabling Brave Rewards?
Is the issue reproducible on the latest version of Chrome? no, there is no button there at all in chrome
funnily enough, a site that brave can't reach is actually reachable with chrome, though - but that's another issue.
