User Testing in Lexington
- 7/9 people signed up for code complaints
- 4/9 people signed up for building permits
- 2 of the above participants signed up for both
- (Code complaints) "Having a child of my own it is important that I know the places I take are up to code and safe." –Shelby O'Rourke
- (Code complaints) "I selected this topic because I am new to Lexington and I am interested to find out what the common code complaints are in the city." –Meghan Houbolt
- (Building permits) "My concern is that the developers... will see the development opportunities downtown and bring terrible suburban-style, single-use, automobile centered development to downtown." –Ryan Cooper
- 7/9 people signed up with their home address
- 1/9 people signed up with their work address
- 1/9 person signed up for their council district (legislative aide)
- 4/9 selected email
- 5/9 selected SMS
- On why she chose email: "I am not sure how many message will come and I would like to keep them all in the same place." –Jamie Giles
- "Wish I knew what information I would be receiving (addresses, names, etc.)" –Mac Glidewell
- "Will the text message with the code enforcement say if it is valid or not. I can see homeowners becoming made if their neighbors gets text about their property if it is not valid. Especially land lords." –Jamie Giles
Week 1 Takeaways: people want to know what's going on around them and test out their hypotheses about neighborhood activity. About equal interest in the 2 different notification methods. Folks who chose email, wanted to get all these updates in one place. Feedback confirms need for topic definitions.
- "It would have been nice to have a link to a definition of what the code violation was. Maybe a link straight to the ordinance in question." –Nick Kilby
- "If possible it would be nice to see a map with each text." –Mac Glidewell
- "The estimated number of text messages was off by a factor of 1000%. From the 1-mile radius zone I was anticipating 20 and only got 1 notification." –Russ Sitter
-
"I thought that the code complaints were of value, but I would have liked to receive a text when the case was closed also. I would prefer to see the progress of the complaint and the actions taken." –Meghan Houbolt

"Well, I know from this that a building permit application was submitted for 111 W Vine St - a location within 1/4mi of my apartment - for <=$1.5 million. But I don't know what a Mechanical Comm. is. It'd be nice to know who or what entity submitted the application. I also don't really know where 111 W Vine St is. I have an idea, but it'd be nice if there were a link in the digest to take me to that location on a map.

..there's no links to the actual building permit, no indication of who filed, and I don't know what the categories of building permits mean. It's just not super-useful except that it tells me something happened. If I could be guided through Citygram to more information, I'd definitely use it, but I didn't see that." –Ryan Matthew Cooper
- "Maybe suggest to people why they should care about building permits and foreclosures." –Mac Glidewell
- "Better defined what was included. Examples would be helpful." –Sarah Barrett
- "What the text message will say. And how much info the email will provide." –Jamie Giles
Week 2 Takeaways: Would be nice to link to notification on a map. People needed more context for code ordinances and for building permits contexts (who's responsible, what's the category mean?) Make it more obvious that users can click on map markers to view a sample notification. There's demand for drawing custom address polygons.
- Council meetings that pertain to your selected Citygram region (perhaps public hearing/zone changes is a good place to start).
- Restaurant openings
- Sex offenders
- Street closures
- Leaf collection pickup schedule
- Change either blue dots or blue address radius. "Blue dots are confusingly styled the same as the radius circle." –Ryan
- Default display a notification tooltip on the map upon address selection. Most participants didn't realize the blue dots were clickable to view a sample message.
- Re-center map on new address inputs.
- [DONE] Darken light grey fonts and increase frequency estimate font size for older user base.
- Link to address on a map so it's easier to visualize location. Most don't know locations by street address.
- Change cityscape filter to Wildcats blue ;)
- Provide link to actual building permit or code violation complaint. "Link to find out more".
- Provide additional context to explain ordinances and jargon-y building permit categories.
- Consider taking out "Case ID #" not important for folks to know. Would rather have additional context.
- Is it necessary to notify folks when code complaints are filed as "Invalid"?
Participants who wanted to see get info pushed out to them, and ensure that they see the notifications, selected SMS. Folks who preferred the ability to view the information when convenient, chose email. These folks preferred to keep text messages for personal and more urgent use cases.
