suspicious that the mumps problem might be affecting mac mpich now, too, since the error is in the same place as before with openmpi. Will investigate later, probably Monday. If you want linux builds, you can merge this and the failing mac builds just won't publish (though mac-arm builds which can't be tested tested will get published, even though they will also see this error).

I can reproduce the error locally, but need to spend more time to get a debugger for a traceback.
