tzdata
does not distribute tzdata
I believe the confusion comes from the eponymous python packages packaged on PyPI which originally was used for the recipe. |
I guess the best is to have another dedicated package for the Time Zone Database Data Only Distribution; I have opened conda-forge/staged-recipes#26481 accordingly. |
I just have reopened this issue since we probably need to discuss the packaging of the three distributions (namely the "Data Only Distribution", the "Code Only Distribution" and the "Complete Distribution (Data, Code and Extras)") of the Time Zone Database further. |
This is the contents of the built tzdata, not the source distribution that you pasted above:
It containts only the zoneinfo as expected, no tzcode. I believe that @mbargull added the tzcode here just to help with the build instead of relying on the existing feedstock. We don't recall why but the content is not wrong. This is tzcode, linux, BTW:
TL;DR it is not a bug. We could make this feedstock output both and archive the tzcode one but that is not a priority. |

Hi @ocefpaf I think that some of my message might have been confusing. The built Time Zone Database (which is packaged on conda-forge under Here are their contents:
|
Probably not. That data is kind of a source distribution. When building packages like HowardHinnant/date we can add the tzdata source as in the source section to download at build time. Having data packages is quite laborious and probably a road that we don't want to go. We would "own and maintain" way more than we can handle. |

Closing after conda-forge/howardhinnant_date-feedstock#11. Sorry for the disruption. |
Solution to issue cannot be found in the documentation.
Issue
The Time Zone DataBase has several distributions, including the "Data Only Distribution" (i.e. the content of
tzdata*.tar.gz
) which is currently not distributed on conda-forge.Content of
tzdata2024a.tar.gz
Content of
tzdata-2024a-h0c530f3_0/pkg-tzdata-2024a-h0c530f3_0
Some projects in the ecosystem, like
HowardHinnant/date
)), depend on it.To me, the ideal resolution pathway would be to have
tzdata-feedstock
ship the content oftzdata*.tar.gz
