Overview
--------

xvp (standing for Xen VNC Proxy) is a proxy server providing
password-protected VNC-based access to the consoles of virtual machines
hosted on Citrix XenServer and Xen Cloud Platform.

Relying on a simple configuration file, it listens on multiple ports,
one per virtual machine, and forwards VNC sessions to the appropriate
server host(s).  It uses a VNC password for each virtual machine, as
specified in encrypted form in the configuration file.  You can write a
configuration file by hand, or make use of the supplied xvpdiscover
utility to query your pool and write a configuration file for you.

Standard VNC clients can connect to the appropriate port for the virtual
machine they wish to access, and for each client a separate xvp process
is forked to authenticate the client, connect to the appropriate server
host, and proxy the data traffic.

A custom Java-based VNC client, xvpviewer, is supplied with xvp.  This
is based on the TightVNC viewer, but with xvp-specific additions to
allow virtual machine shutdown, reboot and reset to be initiated from
the viewer, and to provide mouse-wheel support.

Also supplied is a web-based front end, xvpweb, providing a status view
of XenServer and Xen Cloud Platform pools, hosts and virtual machines,
and easy facilities to view virtual machine consoles and to boot,
shutdown and reboot, suspend, resume, snapshot, revert and migrate
virtual machines.  It makes use of xvp (running on the same machine as
the web server) and xvpviewer (supplied in applet form).  By making use
of a database or flat file, it can be made to restrict which users can
manage particular virtual machines or groups of virtual machines.

A complete self-contained appliance virtual machine, "xvpappliance", is
also available.  This has xvp, xvpdiscover, xvpviewer and xvpweb
pre-installed, and includes a simple to use menu-driven configuration
program.

Building
--------

To build xvp, you must first install the development packages for
libxml2, curl, and the the XenServer C SDK 5.0.0 or 5.5.0 header files
and library (libxenserver).  To run it, you just need the corresponding
libraries.

To build xvpviewer, you need a Java compiler.  To run it, you just
need the JAR file or the compiled class files.  It is supplied with a
shell script wrapper "xvpviewer", which has been tested on Linux, Mac OS
X and Solaris, and a batch file "xvpviewer.bat" for Windows.

To build both xvp and xvpviewer, extract the tarball and run "make" in
its top-level directory.  To install both and associated manual pages,
run "make install" (you will probably need to be root to do this).

The web-based front end is written in PHP and requires PHP 5 with
support for cURL, mcrypt and PDO.  It has to be run on the same host as
xvp, and to have access to the same xvp.conf configuration file, or a
copy of it (the location where this is looked for is specified in the
web file globals.inc, and defaults to /etc/xvp.conf).  It has been
tested using PHP 5.2 running in the Apache 2.2 web server.  To install,
simply copy the contents of the "web" directory in the extracted tarball
to an appropriate location for your web server.

Security Considerations
-----------------------

Before deploying xvp, especially in an Internet-facing environment, you
must consider and address the security issues.  These include.

1. Securing the xvp.conf file

This file contains passwords enabling direct access to your server hosts
and virtual machines.  Although these are held encrypted in the file,
the encryption is reversible, and anyone with access to your
configuration file and the source code of xvp can decrypt them.

If you are not using xvpweb, you should set the permissions on xvp.conf
and its containing directory tree so that only root can access it, and
adequately secure login and network file access to the machine holding
the file.  If you are using xvpweb, you need to relax the file
permissions carefully, as described below.

2. Securing VNC access

Anybody with a VNC client who can access the VNC ports used by xvp can
attempt to connect to your virtual machine consoles, if they can guess
or discover your VNC passwords.  So if you don't want these ports open
to the world, you should secure them with one or more firewalls.

It is also a good idea not to use the same VNC password for every
virtual machine.  If only using xvpweb for access, the safest option is
to use xvpdiscover to generate random passwords, and to regenerate these
periodically.

If you use the IPCHECK HTTP option in xvp.conf, then xvpweb clients will
not connect directly to xvp, but tunnel their VNC connections via their
web server connection.  If these are your only clients, you do not then
need to allow external access to the VNC ports.

3. Securing xvpweb

By default, any user who can access xvpweb has full control of all
virtual machines.  However, it is possible, and usually desirable, to
enforce per-user access restrictions, by configuring the web server
itself to authenticate users, and configuring xvpweb to then authorise
these users to have appropriate access rights to individual virtual
machines or groups of virtual machines.  The specifics of this are
detailed in the xvpweb(7) and xvpusers.conf(5) manual pages.

There are 5 main aspects to xvpweb security: web page access via
HTTP/HTTPS, console access via VNC, console access via a tunnel over
HTTP or HTTPS, access to xvp configuration data and security of VNC
passwords.

Firstly, you should secure your web server if you don't want everybody
from anywhere to access the web interface.  Require your users to
authenticate to the Apache web server itself, preferably over a secure
(HTTPS) connection, and use the DATABASE keyword in xvp.conf to give
some granularity as to which users can access which virtual machines.

Secondly, be aware that when a user clicks on the console button for a
virtual machine in xvpweb, their browser runs a Java applet, downloaded
from your web server.  If you are using IPCHECK ON or IPCHECK OFF in
xvp.conf, the applet then bypasses the web server to make a console
connection, by connecting directly to xvp on the relevant VNC port.  So
in this scenario you need to open your VNC ports to the IP addresses of
your web users.  If xvpweb is the only way you want users to connect
(i.e. not running xvpviewer or any other standard VNC client program),
use "OTP REQUIRE" in xvp.conf to force clients to use xvpweb's one-time
passwords (see below), and lock out standard VNC clients.

If you want to use IPCHECK HTTP so that xvpweb clients tunnel their
console connections over their web server connection, you need to enable
proxying on your web server, but this poses severe risks to you and the
wider Internet if not done securely.  Before pursuing this option,

Next, think hard about how you are going to protect your xvp.conf
file.  Typically, the Apache web server runs as user "apache" in group
"apache".  If you run all PHP scripts under this account, then this user
must be able to read the xvp.conf file.  However, you don't want
everybody to read it, and you don't want "apache" to change it.  So you
might set its file permissions to look something like:

  # ls -l /etc/xvp.conf
  -rw-r----- 1 root apache 296 Nov 24 13:05 /etc/xvp.conf

That's all very well, but then any PHP script on your web server can
read the file, not just the xvpweb pages.  So you should either (a) not
have any PHP scripts on the web server apart from xvpweb, or (b) use a
mechanism whereby different scripts are owned by different users, for
instance by using using mod_suphp (www.suphp.org).

If you are using an xvpusers.conf file, restrict direct access to this
in the same way as for xvp.conf.  Alternatively, if you are using a
relational database to store user rights for xvpweb, ensure that access
to this (especially for updates) is controlled appropriately.

If you are using a relational database instead of an xvpusers.conf file,
and the database server can authenticate users, you should include a
username and encrypted password on the "DATABASE" line in xvp.conf,
preferably using an account which has very limited access rights to the
server's databases (ideally, read-only access to the xvp_users table in
the selected database, and no access to any other databases or tables).
If you have a SQLite database, use operating system file permissions to
secure the database file appropriately: in particular, don't give PHP
scripts run by the web server the ability to write to it.

Finally, be aware that xvpweb exposes VNC passwords (not xvpweb's own
per-user passwords, if in use) to the browser, and these could
potentially be intercepted and reused by unauthorised people.  The
architecture is such that when the user clicks on a virtual machine's
console button in xvpweb, a page is returned to the browser, in a zero
sized frame within the main page, containing an applet definition, which
includes the VNC password.  This password is passed to the applet for it
to pass in turn to xvp when it connects.  Prior to xvpweb version 1.3,
the password was presented to the user in unencrypted form, which
presented a significant security risk.  However, from version 1.3
onwards, it is presented as an effectively non-decryptable encrypted one
time password.

By default, the one time passwords are valid for 60 seconds, but you can
change this setting using the OTP keyword in xvp.conf.  In addition,
although not by default, you can use an OTP keyword option to make each
one time password valid for a single IP address only: this is the
address from which the client connected to xvpweb over HTTP/HTTPS, as
viewed by the Apache web server running xvpweb.  You should turn IP
checking on, if you can.  However, depending on any intervening proxies,
caches, load balancers, etc, the IP address that xvpweb pages in PHP see
the client coming from may not be the same as the address xvp sees the
VNC connection coming from.  If you have such IP discrepancies, you may
be able to resolve them using e.g. using the mod_extract_forwarded
module for Apache (http://www.openinfo.co.uk/apache/), and then turn on
IP checking in xvp.  The most secure setting in xvp.conf, if you're just
using xvpweb, and don't have IP address discrepancies, would be:

  OTP REQUIRE IPCHECK ON      (if not using VNC over HTTP(S) tunnelling)
  OTP REQUIRE IPCHECK HTTP    (if using tunnelling)

possibly with a shorter time window than 60 seconds.
