The monospace font is not different enough and the background is too blended in (at least on the dark theme). Some sort of explicit colour change would be appreciated.

FWIW, discord does this by significantly darkening the background, but i think that Element's dark theme is already too dark for it, maybe a white border?

We've gotten away with nearly jet black backgrounds on inline text before - we can do the same again.

Personally, I found it too harsh and so did others. Will try to play with the colors a bit more soon

I think it's interesting where code blocks originally come from though, as they're pretty much nodding towards "terminals" and their style, white text on dark backgrounds, and that idea being propagated as "hey, codeblocks are small snippets off of your terminal". Now they're going more towards "hey, they're small snippets off of your obviously dark mode IDE".

From this, i'd say to still try to make codeblocks "darker" compared to their background, at least when thinking about a new design for it, because i think above is some thought of where they originated from.

I think Jonathan has the right idea, and I thought something similar before. Element should probably look at a couple IDEs and their respective dark and light mode and then find the places to tweak so the contrast to regular massages in the respective themes isn't lost.
Element's dark bgcolor is #15191E, but there is still ways to go without jet black. For example github goes as dark as #090C10. With the right element hue to it I think that principle would work and still be nicer.

FWIW, on the darkest GitHub mode "default dark", github actually slightly brightens the codeblocks a tad;
