Icons missing in Essential 2.7.7 using Moodle 2.7.2 #328

We have found with some of our people who have to add & edit content, when in the editing mode in Moodle, using IE9. That some of the icons are missing:

• Move resource icon is missing
• Edit title icon is missing for the resources
• Move Block icon is missing

missing_icons_blocks

The actual functionality is still there. But the icons are not visible. These people have only IE9 to work with since it is a project with the Veterans Affairs. So using a different browser is not an option for us, or upgrading to a new version of IE is not available to us either, at this point.

Currently using on our test site:
Moodle 2.7.2 (Build 20140619)
Essential 2.7.7 (Build 2014090303)

Any help on solving this problem would be much appreciated.

Thank you.
Stuart

Please look at: FortAwesome/Font-Awesome#374 and see if changing: https://github.com/gjb2048/moodle-theme_essential/blob/master/style/fontawesome.css#L12-L18 - i.e. the first 'eot' to 'embedded-opentype' and see if that fixes it for you.

The other alternative is to disable FontAwesome for IE9, but that will take some time to figure out.

I will take a look.

Also, may I ask why you cannot update IE? Why are they stuck on IE9? And why another browser cannot be used? Constraints of an out of date browser are to be honest, not one of my biggest priorities for time on the theme.

Our client is the Veterans Benefits Administration. Anytime I have worked for the Federal Government or Military, IE is the required browser to use. I don’t use IE myself, I use Chrome and Firefox. I only test the sites in IE if I have these this type of requirements/restrictions. I’ve gotten around that problem by not being on a locked down network like these other people are on. So I don’t have this problem

That is why I’ve reached out to you to see if there is anything you can do to help. I have made the request to make these obvious updates, but that is not a one day turn around, if given the ok.

And I do understand this is not a priority.

Thanks again.

Thank you for your reply Stuart.

It is rather worrying that restrictive out of date systems can access networks which are up-to-date and therefore could harbor any range of nasties that target old software. At least the boot loader for the computer is not stored on punched tape.

On Friday, after I updated the fontawesome.ccs file as you suggested. We were getting double icons.
admin_block

So I deleted the entire Essential theme and re installed the theme again. That has taken care of the double icons in IE9. But now the font icons are not showing up in Chrome.

admin_block_chrome

So now I am in the process of setting everything in Essential to default. I will clear the cache, have Chrome, Firefox and IE9 three open to see where I am at that point.

If I have any odd things show up I will let you know. If not I will move on to the info you sent me from css-tricks.com.

Thanks,
Stuart

The double icons mean that both the SVG and FontAwesome icons are being displayed. This indicates that the FA css fix worked but that the 'hiding' of the SVG icons is not working for some (CSS) reason.
