Add resources.PostCSS #4858

Autoprefixer is so important in my opinion, that, I think it's not a
problem if it's a bit slow.

This would in practice mean to shell out to postcss-cli until a Go
implementation pops up. I don't think the speed should be a big problem,
assuming you would do this for a small set of CSS files, and you could wrap
it in if not .IsServer during development if needed.

I agree with @RickCogley |
Would we be able to configure the Autoprefixer rules or only use the defaults? And not to take if off topic, but since you're thinking of the postcss-cli route could that also give us uncss? This probably moves away from the Hugo philosophy, but allowing configs in the asset directory could be really sweet here. For example a postcss.config.js in For me personally that would remove the need for using Gulp completely. Regardless, amazing work with this! Excited to use it. |
I have thought about it, and I think I will just add |
I have added a quick implementation and tested this. It works great.
|
Read the cli docs a litt fast -- it actually support both reading from stdin and writing to stdout, which means we can get rid of the temp files and stream directly, which makes it slightly faster. This is going to be good. |
Here is my current test site with Bootstrap 4 with some added styles ... all processed with Hugo. Autoprefixer rules are the same as Boostrap uses in their build: |
Thank you. This is great! |
No pain no gain. If it's easy enough not to do why would anyone do…
Why would we have Sass without Sass mixins? |
You would not. But I meant specific mixins to handle browser vendor prefixing |
Before this commit, you would have to use page bundles to do image processing etc. in Hugo. This commit adds * A new `/assets` top-level project or theme dir (configurable via `assetDir`) * A new template func, `resources.Get` which can be used to "get a resource" that can be further processed. This means that you can now do this in your templates (or shortcodes): ```bash {{ $sunset := (resources.Get "images/sunset.jpg").Fill "300x200" }} ``` This also adds a new `extended` build tag that enables powerful SCSS/SASS support. To compile this from source, you will also need a C compiler installed: ``` HUGO_BUILD_TAGS=extended mage install ``` The `SCSS` processor is a _Resource transformation step_ and it can be chained with the many others in a pipeline: ```bash {{ $css := resources.Get "styles.scss" | resources.ToCSS | resources.Minify | resources.Fingerprint }} <link rel="stylesheet" href="{{ $styles.RelPermalink }}" integrity="{{ $styles.Data.Digest }}" media="screen"> ``` The transformation funcs above have aliases, so it can be shortened to: ```bash {{ $css := resources.Get "styles.scss" | toCSS | minify | fingerprint }} <link rel="stylesheet" href="{{ $styles.RelPermalink }}" integrity="{{ $styles.Data.Digest }}" media="screen"> ``` A quick tip would be to avoid the fingerprinting part when you're doing development, as it allows Hugo to be smarter about the rebuilding. New functions to create `Resource` objects: * `resources.Get` (see above) * `resources.FromString`: Create a Resource from a string. New `Resource` transformation funcs: * `resources.ToCSS`: Compile SCSS or SASS into CSS. * `resources.PostCSS`: Process your CSS with PostCSS. Config file support (project or theme or passed as an option). * `resources.Minify`: Currently supports css, js, json, html, svg, xml. * `resources.Fingerprint`: Creates a fingerprinted version of the given Resource with Subresource Integrity.. * `resources.Concat`: Concatenates a list of Resource objects. Think of this as a poor man's bundler. * `resources.ExecuteAsTemplate`: Parses and executes the given Resource and data context (e.g. .Site) as a Go template.
