Ran pre-commit run --all-files on the complete codebase
Adapted code so that mypy no longer complained
converted LICENSE from .txt to . md in preparation for documentation site
updated package versions in .pre-commit-config.yaml
fix a typo
rename mypy cache folder from nul to .mypy_cache
