iSCSI initiator is a software initiator for macOS. It allows machines running macOS to connect to iSCSI targets. It automatically detects and mounts logical units on which users can then create and mount volumes. For more information about the iSCSI standard, see IETF RFC3720.

The initiator includes a command-line utility that allows users to discover and login to iSCSI targets. In addition, the initiator has been designed specifically for macOS and integrates with various macOS subsystems. This allows standard macOS utilities to manage aspects of the initiator. For example, shared secrets used for CHAP authentication are stored in the system keychain and can be modified using the Keychain Access utility. iSCSI disks are mounted as standard macOS disks can may be formatted using Disk Utility. Authorization for various tasks, including login, logout and modifications to the initiator configuration are managed using the macOS authorization database.
