TopoVGM

TopoVGM (Topology Volume Group Manager) is a Kubernetes Operator that manages the creation and deletion of Logical Volume Manager (LVM) Volume Group on Kubernetes nodes as a daemon. It is intended to be used in conjunction with the TopoLVM project, but can be used independently as well. Its heart lies within its ability to establish a syncing procedure for volume groups across multiple nodes in a Kubernetes cluster.

My final goal is to contribute this project to the TopoLVM project community as I believe that is where it can mature into a more robust and feature-rich project.

Description

TopoVGM is a Kubernetes Operator that manages the creation and deletion of Logical Volume Manager (LVM) Volume Group on Kubernetes nodes as a daemon.

To do this it makes of a Custom Resource Definition (CRD) called VolumeGroup which is a representation of the Volume Group that needs to be created on the node. The operator watches for the creation of this CRD and then creates the Volume Group on the node.

The operator also watches for the deletion of the CRD and then deletes the Volume Group on the node.

Here is an example of the VolumeGroup CRD that will attempt to use all loop devices on the node as well as a custom storage device:

While this is a simple example, the VolumeGroup CRD can be customized to match any specific requirements that you may have. Almost all of the vgcreate / vgchange commands you are used to from the command line can be represented in the VolumeGroup CRD.

You will notice that the VolumeGroup exposes a significant Status that can be used both for extension of functionality, debugging or monitoring. Here is an example for that

Getting Started

Prerequisites

  • go version v1.22.0+
  • docker version 17.03+.
  • kubectl version v1.30+.
  • Access to a Kubernetes v1.30+ cluster.
  • lsblk from util-linux 2.39.4+
  • lvm2 version 2.03.11+ (ideally 2.03.23) on the node

To install the node dependencies, you can run the following command:

For Debian-based systems

sudo apt-get install -y lvm2 util-linux

For CentOS / Fedora / RHEL

sudo dnf install -y lvm2 util-linux

To Deploy on the cluster

Build and push your image to the location specified by IMG:

make docker-build docker-push IMG=<some-registry>/topovgm:tag

NOTE: This image ought to be published in the personal registry you specified. And it is required to have access to pull the image from the working environment. Make sure you have the proper permission to the registry if the above commands don’t work.

Install the CRDs into the cluster:

make install

Deploy the Manager to the cluster with the image specified by IMG:

make deploy IMG=<some-registry>/topovgm:tag

NOTE: If you encounter RBAC errors, you may need to grant yourself cluster-admin privileges or be logged in as admin.

Create instances of your solution You can apply the samples (examples) from the config/sample:

kubectl apply -k config/samples/

NOTE: Ensure that the samples has default values to test it out.

To Uninstall

Delete the instances (CRs) from the cluster:

kubectl delete -k config/samples/

Delete the APIs(CRDs) from the cluster:

make uninstall

UnDeploy the controller from the cluster:

make undeploy

Project Distribution

Following are the steps to build the installer and distribute this project to users.

  1. Build the installer for the image built and published in the registry:
make build-installer IMG=<some-registry>/topovgm:tag

NOTE: The makefile target mentioned above generates an 'install.yaml' file in the dist directory. This file contains all the resources built with Kustomize, which are necessary to install this project without its dependencies.

  1. Using the installer

Users can just run kubectl apply -f to install the project, i.e.:

kubectl apply -f https://raw.githubusercontent.com/<org>/topovgm/<tag or branch>/dist/install.yaml
