I've looked into this a bit more. Elasticsearch's plugin mechanism doesn't ignore the module-info.class files as it should. This was only fixed in 2018 and never backported to ES5. so we are stuck with log4j 2.9.1 until we update ES.

wow thanks @lonvia , I could not figure out the reason, so i came back crawling to the old version. there was a security issue regarding sending logs via smtp. we do not do that and probably most others neither. I am not very concerned.
