function to check features "ok"

Want a function that checks features (e.g. metabolites) are ok before running data analysis. Need to come up with a specific set of rules for what "not ok" means (e.g. zero variance, <x non-NA values, etc.).
Need discuss where in the pipeline this function would be used by the user.
