I think the point about switching to having two of something should be "If you recently had one-thousand dollars, but are now up to two?" rather than "If you recently had one-thousand dollars, but are now down to two?". Unless you mean you had one-thousand dollars and now have two dollars. It's confusing given the previous example of having one lover and going up to two.

the thousand is implicit. "now up to two (thousand) dollars." I agree it does not make sense otherwise
