Manage FileMgr view defaults by folder, file type, etc. and prevent re-set w/o permission. #61
Comments
Hi @JimSpeed , could you please provide additional details on what you mean? |
Hi Jaime,
Windows has had a set default view feature back to (I think) Win95, but it doesn’t work. It seems to me that every time a Windows update is installed or in some cases a third party app software update is installed, everything reverts to the original MS defaults based on folder types.
There is also the File Mgr/folder/properties/Customize/ where one can choose to define the folder type as, General, Documents, Pictures, Music, or Videos, and include subfolders. This does not extend to selecting the “View,” and it does not become the default for very long in my experience.
As an old UNIX user, I want the ability to set the entire file system to “View Details, AND have the setting stick until manually changed. Manual changes to be temporary, and revert to the defined default (for me, View Details) when the focus on the directory is removed.
A little frosting on the cake would include the ability to define for "View Details" the default columns, their placement, and sort order.
If you know of a current way to accomplish this, please tell me. I’ll test it, and possibly pull my Power Tools suggestion.
BTW
MS is working on a batch file rename app. Have they not discovered the incredible Bulk Rename Utility by TGRMN Software?
Jim

I think the File Explorer already has similar features, like setting the view options by folder and remembering them, having "Customize this folder..." option on right-click, etc...

Hi @JimSpeed , Thank you for the clarification to your suggestion, as it's possible this might be a future PowerToy if it's a feature achievable through one. My own experience when using Windows 10 is that I have the "Details" view by default and Windows 10 seems to remember folder specific settings through updates (for example, my Downloads folder with extra columns and ordered to show the most recent downloads first, stays that way). Your experience seems to be different, though. In "Folder Options", "View", there's a button to apply the current "view (such as Details or Icons) to all folders of this type." Suggestions regarding other PowerToys, like the batch file renamer, would be better discussed in their separate issues. Thank you for your comments 👍 |
