Tumblr: gallery-dl not downloading the best image quality available #1344

Taking these two posts as examples:

https://hameru-is-cool.tumblr.com/post/639185159893221377/jisatsu-draw-laughing-hanekawas

If I simply download the images with "Right click > Save image as", they are saved with a much higher resolution and quality than if I use gallery-dl to do so.
For the first link, downloading with the right-click method, the image is saved with 1280x1280px, but using gallery-dl, it is saved with just 640x640px.
And for the second link, firstly clicking the image to be redirected to a higher resolution version, the right-click method saves an image of 1600x1442, while gallery-dl saves the same image with 1280x1154.

Why it occurs and how could I solve this?

Noticed the s2048x3072? It has to do with it.

But when data post extracted from gallery-dl -j https://hameru-is-cool.tumblr.com/post/639261855227002880, it shows none. 😐

@mikf Apparently the API doesn't do as good of a job at determining the best possible image quality as its hidden web service. TumblThree implemented it. It requires a login cookie to function correctly, though.

It's written in C#, but it does at least point in the right direction: https://github.com/TumblThreeApp/TumblThree/blob/master/src/TumblThree/TumblThree.Applications/Crawler/TumblrHiddenCrawler.cs

It looks like a pain in the ass, so it's understandable if you don't implement it. Not a lot of people still use Tumblr.

I noticed the following behavior of Tumblr's regular view (accessible via the URL scheme "https://.tumblr.com/post/") and blog view (accessible via the URL scheme https://www.tumblr.com/blog/view//) yield sometimes pictures with a different resolution (the blog view sometimes shows pictures with a higher resolution than the regular view).
