Used the molex connectors and plugged right into my Pit Boss and eliminated
the original controller. The enclosure is mounted using the original
mounting holes where the controller counted to. Used the original pit temp
sensor too which made install much quicker. Everything is mounted to a
piece of 1/4" thick PVC sheet in the back of the enclosure. Still need to
mount the OLED and ON/OFF switch inside the cover but we are up and running!
For the Molex connectors I used this crimping tool...

The 5V power supply was something I had laying around already. Everything
else is exactly from the project documentation page. Used the SSR relays
and with nebhead's latest updates it works PERFECTLY!

Ended up with 3x TP25 probes. I initially bought another cheaper probe off eBay but had trouble with inconsistent readings on it. These are much better. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08CGMC846/. Ran into the same problems on jacks where the probes have to be inserted to a very specific depth. Ended up solving this with some small 3d printed washers at ~ 1.5mm thick.

Thanks @gsherwin74!!! Good to hear that the TP25 probes work well. I almost bought some of those a while back, but ended up sticking with the thermoworks probe again since it was a known good probe. I'll have to pick these up the next time I need new probes. I really like the idea of using the Deutsch connector. That might be something I look into, if I ever revamp the design. :) |

I have been working on building this a bit and learning OnShape and EasyEDA along with just purchasing a 3D printer and trying to figure out how to use the damn thing and get a good first layer with PETG. Uhh the printer has been driving me crazy I redesigned the hat pcb a bit as I wanted a dedicated header for the buttons another probe input and I moved the power connector to better fit the control box I am designing. Also resized the mounting holes a bit as they were like 2mm and super small. I created and ordered some button PCB's as well since I was ordering the new hat's I am starting to print some of the boxes now but due to the 3D printing learning curve I will need to print a lot of it again so it looks better. I shrunk the display box as small as I could get it, resized it to fit a 2.8spi screen, tightened up the tolerances including around the buttons to get the best feel that I could and then moved all the screws to inside or the back/bottom. I designed a new control box for the main pcb, relay pcb's and the 5v PSU. I am currently working on the pellet sensor housing and mounting I really want to redesign the display housing so it is easier to print the face and have the results come out good. The 45ish angles seem to be the difficult part on that. I am still thinking about the best way to create that without needing a bunch of supports when printing the box part. I hope I can get the rest of the stuff printed soon and get this thing together and give it a whirl. I will post more pics as I get some more of the stuff together. |

FYI, I finally got around to putting a fuse inline with the power supply. I picked up this kit of inline fuse holders and quick blow fuses here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F8RLMPB/ I also picked up an assortment of slow-blow fuses here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08QCDHPCJ/ I then used some left over Molex connectors to add the fuse to my existing power cord. This is what it looks like.
I went with a 5A slow-blow fuse because I wanted to test it for a while to make sure current spikes didn't accidentally blow it up. I'll report back later to let you know if I find any issues. |

Awesome. Have not gotten around to this yet but that is exactly my plan to add the fuse. Let me know how the 5a fuse goes. I think it will be fine as I believe that is what the grills originally came with. I doubt the current draw from the 5v psu and pi would require a larger fuse. |

The intersection between electronics projects and eating good food. If I wanted to actually cook I wouldn't have bought an easy bake smoker :) @nebhead great work with this. I opened the PiSmoker docs many times and never started because I didn't feel like going down the rabbit hole of sourcing parts. You've really done great work with it @weberbox nice job with the PCB. Ordering one now. If that PETG is still giving you trouble I can share my settings or help troubleshoot, I'm on an Ender 3 running Klipper/Fluidd and using SuperSlic3r. Been printing PETG all week. PETG spaghettis more on me than PLA (I think I need to retract more and get my dang food dehydrator back) but it doesn't happen often |

Super late on this but how do you like Klipper? I was thinking about going this route but didn't want to lose the display on the ender3 v2 as I actually use it. I run octoprint on a pi 4. Now that the zero 2 is out I could run Klipper on that and use the pi4 for something else. I have been running the jyres firmware with ubl and have much better PETG prints now but they are still a bitch to get them to stick to the build plate. |

This might not be the most eye catching build but I wanted to post mine in case someone was looking for a easy way to throw everything together (similar to nebhead's first build). I had originally found the pismoker page from dborello and was really excited to try and build a better controller for my aging traeger lil tex. Unfortunately I am not the most savvy person when it comes to writing code or configuring electronics so I kind of gave up on trying to pursue making one. After finding Nebhead's PiFire page I was encouraged that I could figure it out this time and make the build. As you all know he made a great instruction page with as the parts sourcing and auto code installation which made this project achievable for people who are not as familiar with this kind of stuff. Big thanks to Nebhead and Weberbox for helping me troubleshoot a bit too. For my build I just went with the recommended components and attempted to stuff them all into a $5 harborfrieght organizer. Its a bit snug but after making "90 deg" dupont connectors and taking off some shielding I was able to get it all to fit. The great thing is it is all waterproof too and easily removable from the grill. I might make a second version or try and clean this up a bit so it doesnt look as rough but I am happy with its functionality. All in I would say it was about $100 to build if you dont count tooling and extra components from the kits. |

Honestly, this is great! I love seeing everyone's unique build setup. I think we all get good ideas when we share. Smart to use an inexpensive box from Harbor Freight - and doesn't look half bad at all! Great job! |

Oh, I realize now that you were talking about the control case. I drilled a couple of holes below the control panel area and mounted it there. It's hard to visualize, but it was a nice open spot, far enough from the hot grill. |

I've finally finished all the soldering and putting stuff together. Now I need to figure out mounting. My grill is a bit different with the horizonal control panel. I planned on mounting everything to a sheet or something on the side using existing screws for the handles. Obviously your 3d designs mount the display box where the stock controller would be. Where are you mounting the PCB housings? Or do they go inside the grill where the motor/fan is? Just looking for ideas, because I'm horribly lacking in the 3d design realm. Tinkercad is about my limit. :) |

Whipped up a couple of pictures from my build. I pulled these out of my old photos, so it's a little nicer looking now, but it's a bit of rats nest in these pictures. Here you can see the control box mounted on the front of the bottom portion of the hopper box. It's furthest from the actual grill and sort of tucked into the corner. And from the outside, I've marked the area that the control box is, inside the base of the hopper box. I've drilled a couple of M5 bolt holes to mount it. Hope this helps! |

Ahh Gotcha. I wasn't sure if it was actually inside or not. I printed most of your parts before realizing I bought the wrong screen. Right interface, but the 2.8" version. I'm going to re-print weberbox's version but I might remix the display box together with the control box to mount outside, together. I need to pull my controller out and see how much room is in there. Looking up thru the vent from below, it looks pretty tight. |

I've done my "alpha release" for testing before I went in whole hog. I'm loving using the PiFire for smoking. Here's what I've upgraded to since then.
I've gotten this far; but, still need to figure out where to hide the Pi, hat, and relay board. I'll have it on the smoker this weekend and upload pictures of it attached. The fit isn't perfect into my smoker; but, it's close. I'll upload the STLs to thingiverse soon. My thought is to 3d print a box that can be mounted on the inside of the smoker behind the panel that gives easy access when the face is off. I'm currently not using a dedicated power supply since my smoker and Pi are already connected (via extension cord) on a switched outlet from inside. Finally, I ordered both the PiFire Hat and the button PCB so I have extras (as of 1/21/22). If anyone comes across this post and wants a set just let me know in here. |

@M7Fa I did this on an Ender 3 V2 I just bought. I had to mess around with temperatures for a while to get good adhesion with no warping with the PETG filament I used |

That looks great! I might have to do something like this with your

I still need to install pifire and test it out. Also need to investigate
how much room is under the hopper. (Pitboss 440D2 here. That's the

Mine is coming along slowly but surely. Taking the 3.2 display box from @nebhead and the updated PCB and control box from @weberbox. Im making two separate systems at the same time, one for me and one for a family member. Thank you both for your inspiration and hard work. More photos to follow as parts continue to roll in. I've also got 6 or 7 extra PiFire and button PCBs that I'd be glad to donate...just cover shipping. |

Mounted everything up today and discovered amazon selected a 12v high trigger relay. I suppose this explains why fan turns on then when auger tries to turn on fan starts stuttering and auger doesn't move. |

The fact the fan turns on and stalls when other things activate was
puzzling me. Proper relay will be here Saturday. So close :(

Annnd.... my hot rod is dead. Which might be a blessing in disguise because I have noticed that my hot pot is rusted out. :( I've ordered this ceramic coated hot pot and hot rod to arrive tomorrow. (link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09DT5QFMB) Hopefully this works out a little better. For now, I have to manually light the fire. Ugh. |

Ok I found the problem. My raspberrypi and test bench are based on Debian buster and seem to be using python2. I just downloaded and flashed Bullseye and it is using python3. The problem is isAlive() changed to is_alive() in python3 You can edit this in app.py to fix the issue. Line 1511 in app.py currently reads: For python3 it needs to be: |

The app does not care what module you are using. You would need to edit app.py with nano or some other editor and change line 1511. For example ssh into your raspberrypi Find the line should be 1511 and make the change then save with Ctrl x Then you would need to restart the script using supervisor or just reboot the pi |

Looking good! Both the grill and the meat! (and possibly the Ninkasi!) I miss cooking brisket, but the wife doesn't love it and it's outrageously expensive these days. I was thinking we should have a discussion section for just posting pictures of our cooks. Might have to kick that off this weekend. :) |

My wife about had a stroke when saw 240 dollar tag on the prime rib roast that was also in that box. As I said I haven't smoked anything for 6 months so it's time. I can now try the meat church overnight smoke and then wrap before work and monitor while at work and adjust temp as needed. One thing I keep seeing them talk about with new traegers is keep warm mode that keeps grill at 165 I'm gonna do some testing wonder if ours can idle like that. |

Sweet!! This is perfect for car camping / trailer camping. I've had my eye on this one, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I'm excited to see what you can do with this one!
Oh yes! Definitely time for PWM fan control. :) Document your progress and let us know how it goes. If you can do surface mount PCB stuff, then it will hopefully be able to get a bit more compact. |

@weberbox I actually picked one of those up after seeing your post 😂 Since my big grill is out (screen is dead, auger is stuck on full send) I used the tabletop to grill a few things. Only I didn't use a table. Let's just say grilling that close to the ground when you have 5 dogs presents... challenges. Fortunately everything they managed to lick got cooked off and I made sure everyone was inside when I was pulling it off |

@ChasonDeshotel Ya these are pretty cool. I have used mine a couple times while camping and the results are pretty good so far. Cant wait to get PiFire integrated. I hear you on the dogs I have to even worry about that on my full size grill. If I leave the lid open and step away meat will be gone. @nebhead |

Finally got to the day where I could test! I printed @weberbox’s box and slightly modified it to suit my relay board and power supply. Made my own front panel with display and 3 buttons. Thanks for all the hard work you guys have been putting up on this amazing project!

Looks awesome. Great job. I want to get a larger screen and mount it 90° like that on my tabletop grill. I have the 2" screen on there now which is fine but bigger is always better :) Hopefully someday we can get the screens updated to support 90°. I have not looked into it all that much yet but it would require a new design layout otherwise there would just be blank unused space. What size display did you use? The 2.8" or 3.2"? |

Finally got half way there. I have the grill portion working. I have ordered a replacement set of meat probes and I'm waiting for them to arrive. Did a London Broil. Turned out great.
