If we do that, we might get a lot of products which do have barcodes added a second, third or fourth time sans barcode without any way to know that it is in fact the same product.
How can we be sure app authors will do the right thing and discourage that kind of behavior? We sure don't have any way to enforce that.
I for one like the current trade-off of having to use the website to add barcode-less products.

Mmmh… it forces us to confront the issue.
For weight related barcodes, for instance, my guess is that their range is similar, and we could offer a "Products with similar barcodes" for given barcode ranges

Indeed I might be more amenable to this once we've implemented links between products (both diachronic and synchronic).

Why can't you take the food name and brand as primary key?

Heinz Tomato Ketchup for instance? That's dozens of different products.

The Android app needs this bug to be solved to implement it.
