Design forward: »New« menu flow #7031
Comments
On the new file menu we should have:
We should keep in mind to allow apps to register a new action there. In addition I vote once more to remove the "New from Url" action or finally fix it a make it work.

@jancborchardt the trouble with having "Upload" in the menu is that it requires an extra click for each upload. Also people on IE don't benefit from the "select multiple files to upload" and can only select one file at a time. Even worse, they can't drag and drop files from outside. And since it is an important feature we should probably keep it visible enough. |
But everything else looks cool 😄 |
whats going on with this issue? If the file-app gets a app-navigation, the "New" should not be in the Breadcrumbs, but the first position, so the behaviour is the exact same like in other apps (news, contacts). what do you think? |
Yup, if there’s a sidebar we can move the »New« button there. Then we can also do it like in News and Contacts with it opening to the bottom to choose the type of new element. |
Setting this design improvement for ownCloud 8 as the menu needs to be improved. |
Look achieved with #18630, keeping this open to fix the flow. |

Instead of having two separate ways to add files (»New« and »Upload«) we should combine them into a + menu.
The menu would have »Upload«, »New file«, »New folder« (and maybe »New from URL« if we decide to keep the function).
Crude mockup:
This would also solve the confusion about the upload button being a »go to parent folder« function. #4479
