- Make the levels of headings consistent in this whole document
- Fix some headings
- Remove redundant empty lines
- Follow the markdown linter advices to use the same symbol for different level of unordered list entries

It looks like current usage of `swap` is aimed at achieving what
`std::mem::replace` does but more concisely and idiomatically.

Some platforms were not linked from platform-support.md

This fixes that, but errs towards extremely conservative,
only directly linking platform docs if the docs actively
mention the target, as otherwise I do not necessarily
know if there was a reason for the omission.
impl SliceIndex<str> for (Bound<usize>, Bound<usize>)

This impl is conspicuously missing.

style-guide: Document style editions, start 2024 style edition

Link to a snapshot for the 2015/2018/2021 style edition.

This is a draft, because I'd like to wait for a few style guide fixes to merge
before snapshotting the 2015/2018/2021 style edition:

- rust-lang#113145
- rust-lang#113380
- rust-lang#113384
- rust-lang#113385
- rust-lang#113386
- rust-lang#113392

I'd like to wait for these for two reasons: to make it easier to see the
differences between the 2015/2018/2021 style edition and the 2024 style
edition (without the noise of guide-wide changes), and to minimize confusion so
that bugfixes to the style guide that we include in the previous edition don't
look like they're only part of the 2024 style edition.

I've used "Miscellaneous `rustfmt` bugfixes" as a starting point for the list
of 2024 changes, for now. We can update that when we add more 2024 changes.

The section added in this PR can then serve as a baseline for our drafts of
2024 style edition changes.

In the meantime, I'd like to get someone from `@rust-lang/style` to review and
approve the text here; I'll update it with a commit hash when the above PRs
have merged.

bootstrap: use git merge-base for LLVM CI download logic

Fixes rust-lang#101907
I tested this with a local branch that has extra merge commits due to Miri, and it worked fine there. But I am sure there are tons of other situations I did not think of...

Directly link more target docs

Improve the rust style guide doc

- Make the levels of headings consistent in this whole document.
   Before this change, the highest level of headings in some file is level 1, but in most of the files the that is level 2. Not consistent.

- Fix some headings

- Follow the markdown linter advices
  - Remove redundant empty lines
  - Surround each heading with empty lines
  - Use the same symbol for different levels of unordered list entries
Update books

This PR was somehow merged twice (and thus perf. tested twice). I'm not sure if the rustc build regression is caused by that or if it's something else (maybe #113588 or #114309, since these dealt with git somehow?)

91a41abd6ac0a95b49cd69d488feed224279d5c2 doesn't look to be on master compared to c435af0, probably thanks to the failed fast forward, however webhooks may have been sent to the perf server anyways?

The rustc error is weird, it mentions e62323d but it's an old commit. Maybe because it was testing a "regular merge commit" that was not actually on master, the usual git commands or #113588 didn't work 🤔

We can see if it fixes itself in the next couple merged PR it profiles, and otherwise see what needs to be done to update that benchmark (or revert the PR 👼)

Revert rust-lang#113588 to fix bootstrap timings

This reverts rust-lang#113588 which seems to have broken perf's bootstrap timings via some git issue

rust-lang#114318 (comment) show a newly broken benchmark, the error at the time was

```
fatal: Path 'src/ci/channel' exists on disk, but not in 'e62323df22ecf9c163023132d17b7114f68b72e8'.
       thread 'main' panicked at 'command did not execute successfully: cd "/home/collector/rustc-perf/rust" && "git" "show" "e62323df22ecf9c163023132d17b7114f68b72e8:src/ci/channel"
       expected success, got: exit status: 128', config.rs:1786:27
```

If this lands, it will reopen rust-lang#101907 and annoy miri, but it could actually be an issue that would appear during the next bootstrap bump, not just rustc-perf today.
