thanks a lot for the investigation and updated implementation!

since this is a pretty impactful change, i'm going to retarget this branch so we can publish as a beta release to get some feedback before we promote to stable.

i expect that we will need to coordinate with similar changes to the commit-analyzer plugin as well. would you be interested in helping us make those updates as well?
