Station Core

In active development, nothing has been finalized yet.

Goal:

Reduction of part count for stations, to enable them to actually be useful as stations rather than slideshows.

Ideally an ISS-type station should be able to be reduced to <30 parts total. This should leave plenty of room to have a few other reasonable part-count vessels docked at it without resulting in undesirable drops in frame-rate.

Observations:

A large majority of the part-count used in stations comes not from the 'core' modules of the station, but in all of the adapters, docking ports, solar panels, and structural parts needed to make a nice looking station.

Inflatable Habitat usage:

Expandable/inflatable parts require "Rocket Parts" ("Materials Kits" in MKS installs) to be fitted out for use. This represents adding partitions, and all the fittings, life support systems, etc. required for the otherwise empty hab volume to be useful for living and working. There is no requirement that the fitting out parts be delivered at the same time, multiple supply missions might be necessary (see below).

  1. To see how much part mass must be delivered to the habitat, right click the part in the VAB parts menu:

find parts needed to inflate

In this CFG-10 example, the amount is 9.36t.

You can also place the part in the VAB/SPH, then right click the part. It shows the Inflation Resource needed, and how many units are required for inflation.

units required

  1. Knowing the required mass of rocket parts, you can then make sure you have an MFT tank that is attached to the Hab part, or could be docked to it later. To do this, place an MFT tank with the fuel selected as 'Rocket Parts." If you right click the part, Configure Containers will show you the mass of parts carried, which you can adjust as required via altering the % of the tank used for Rocket Parts, or via altering the size of the tank.

In this case the tank has 10.62499t of Rocket Parts.

If using the units of RocketParts to scale a tank rather than mass, simply select RocketParts as the "fuel" for the tank in question, then adjust the size until you have the desired number of units.

  1. Once in place for inflation, right click the Hab part, and hit "inflate." If there is a tank attached with parts, they will be drained from that part. If the mass of parts is sufficient, then the Hab will inflate. If the mass of parts is below the required value, the parts drain from the attached tank, and are incremented in the hab part which will show how many more are needed. Another mission or missions can be flown to the station in order to reach the required number of parts, at which point the Hab inflates and is ready for use.
