Functions that used to be macros and have names in ALL_CAPS should be renamed in lowercase.

(This will be an API change.)

Turn a couple macros into functions.

These don't need to be macros.

At the next release with breaking changes, these will be renamed
so they aren't in all caps. (See issue #64.)
