This moves ARM over to the asm-generic/unaligned.h header. This has the benefit of better code generated especially for ARMv7 on gcc 4.7+ compilers. As Arnd Bergmann, points out: The asm-generic version uses the "struct" version for native-endian unaligned access and the "byteshift" version for the opposite endianess. The current ARM version however uses the "byteshift" implementation for both. Thanks to Nicolas Pitre for the excellent analysis: Test case: int foo (int *x) { return get_unaligned(x); } long long bar (long long *x) { return get_unaligned(x); } With the current ARM version: foo: ldrb r3, [r0, #2] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 2B], MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 2B] ldrb r1, [r0, #1] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 1B], MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 1B] ldrb r2, [r0, #0] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D)], MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D)] mov r3, r3, asl #16 @ tmp154, MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 2B], ldrb r0, [r0, #3] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 3B], MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 3B] orr r3, r3, r1, asl #8 @, tmp155, tmp154, MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 1B], orr r3, r3, r2 @ tmp157, tmp155, MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D)] orr r0, r3, r0, asl #24 @,, tmp157, MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 3B], bx lr @ bar: stmfd sp!, {r4, r5, r6, r7} @, mov r2, #0 @ tmp184, ldrb r5, [r0, #6] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 6B], MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 6B] ldrb r4, [r0, #5] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 5B], MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 5B] ldrb ip, [r0, #2] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 2B], MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 2B] ldrb r1, [r0, #4] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 4B], MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 4B] mov r5, r5, asl #16 @ tmp175, MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 6B], ldrb r7, [r0, #1] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 1B], MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 1B] orr r5, r5, r4, asl #8 @, tmp176, tmp175, MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 5B], ldrb r6, [r0, #7] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 7B], MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 7B] orr r5, r5, r1 @ tmp178, tmp176, MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 4B] ldrb r4, [r0, #0] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D)], MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D)] mov ip, ip, asl #16 @ tmp188, MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 2B], ldrb r1, [r0, #3] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 3B], MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 3B] orr ip, ip, r7, asl #8 @, tmp189, tmp188, MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 1B], orr r3, r5, r6, asl #24 @,, tmp178, MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 7B], orr ip, ip, r4 @ tmp191, tmp189, MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D)] orr ip, ip, r1, asl #24 @, tmp194, tmp191, MEM[(const u8 *)x_1(D) + 3B], mov r1, r3 @, orr r0, r2, ip @ tmp171, tmp184, tmp194 ldmfd sp!, {r4, r5, r6, r7} bx lr In both cases the code is slightly suboptimal. One may wonder why wasting r2 with the constant 0 in the second case for example. And all the mov's could be folded in subsequent orr's, etc. Now with the asm-generic version: foo: ldr r0, [r0, #0] @ unaligned @,* x bx lr @ bar: mov r3, r0 @ x, x ldr r0, [r0, #0] @ unaligned @,* x ldr r1, [r3, #4] @ unaligned @, bx lr @ This is way better of course, but only because this was compiled for ARMv7. In this case the compiler knows that the hardware can do unaligned word access. This isn't that obvious for foo(), but if we remove the get_unaligned() from bar as follows: long long bar (long long *x) {return *x; } then the resulting code is: bar: ldmia r0, {r0, r1} @ x,, bx lr @ So this proves that the presumed aligned vs unaligned cases does have influence on the instructions the compiler may use and that the above unaligned code results are not just an accident. Still... this isn't fully conclusive without at least looking at the resulting assembly fron a pre ARMv6 compilation. Let's see with an ARMv5 target: foo: ldrb r3, [r0, #0] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ tmp139,* x ldrb r1, [r0, #1] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ tmp140, ldrb r2, [r0, #2] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ tmp143, ldrb r0, [r0, #3] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ tmp146, orr r3, r3, r1, asl #8 @, tmp142, tmp139, tmp140, orr r3, r3, r2, asl #16 @, tmp145, tmp142, tmp143, orr r0, r3, r0, asl #24 @,, tmp145, tmp146, bx lr @ bar: stmfd sp!, {r4, r5, r6, r7} @, ldrb r2, [r0, #0] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ tmp139,* x ldrb r7, [r0, #1] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ tmp140, ldrb r3, [r0, #4] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ tmp149, ldrb r6, [r0, #5] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ tmp150, ldrb r5, [r0, #2] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ tmp143, ldrb r4, [r0, #6] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ tmp153, ldrb r1, [r0, #7] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ tmp156, ldrb ip, [r0, #3] @ zero_extendqisi2 @ tmp146, orr r2, r2, r7, asl #8 @, tmp142, tmp139, tmp140, orr r3, r3, r6, asl #8 @, tmp152, tmp149, tmp150, orr r2, r2, r5, asl #16 @, tmp145, tmp142, tmp143, orr r3, r3, r4, asl #16 @, tmp155, tmp152, tmp153, orr r0, r2, ip, asl #24 @,, tmp145, tmp146, orr r1, r3, r1, asl #24 @,, tmp155, tmp156, ldmfd sp!, {r4, r5, r6, r7} bx lr Compared to the initial results, this is really nicely optimized and I couldn't do much better if I were to hand code it myself. The VM ends up calling ->releasepage to get more memory, and it tries to do a blocking commit. That commit can't succeed however without a connected socket, so we deadlock. Fix this by setting PF_FSTRANS on the workqueue task prior to doing the socket allocation, and having nfs_release_page check for that flag when deciding whether to do a commit call. Also, set PF_FSTRANS unconditionally in rpc_async_schedule since that function can also do allocations sometimes. The VM ends up calling ->releasepage to get more memory, and it tries to do a blocking commit. That commit can't succeed however without a connected socket, so we deadlock. Fix this by setting PF_FSTRANS on the workqueue task prior to doing the socket allocation, and having nfs_release_page check for that flag when deciding whether to do a commit call. Also, set PF_FSTRANS unconditionally in rpc_async_schedule since that function can also do allocations sometimes. The VM ends up calling ->releasepage to get more memory, and it tries to do a blocking commit. That commit can't succeed however without a connected socket, so we deadlock. Fix this by setting PF_FSTRANS on the workqueue task prior to doing the socket allocation, and having nfs_release_page check for that flag when deciding whether to do a commit call. Also, set PF_FSTRANS unconditionally in rpc_async_schedule since that function can also do allocations sometimes. One of the problems that arise when converting dedicated custom threadpool to workqueue is that the shared worker pool used by workqueue anonimizes each worker making it more difficult to identify what the worker was doing on which target from the output of sysrq-t or debug dump from oops, BUG() and friends. For example, after writeback is converted to use workqueue instead of priviate thread pool, there's no easy to tell which backing device a writeback work item was working on at the time of task dump, which, according to our writeback brethren, is important in tracking down issues with a lot of mounted file systems on a lot of different devices. This patchset implements a way for a work function to mark its execution instance so that task dump of the worker task includes information to indicate what the work item was doing. An example WARN dump would look like the following. WARNING: at fs/fs-writeback.c:1015 bdi_writeback_workfn+0x2b4/0x3c0() Modules linked in: CPU: 0 Pid: 28 Comm: kworker/u18:0 Not tainted 3.9.0-rc1-work+ torvalds#24 Hardware name: empty empty/S3992, BIOS 080011 10/26/2007 Workqueue: writeback bdi_writeback_workfn (flush-8:16) ffffffff820a3a98 ffff88015b927cb8 ffffffff81c61855 ffff88015b927cf8 ffffffff8108f500 0000000000000000 ffff88007a171948 ffff88007a1716b0 ffff88015b49df00 ffff88015b8d3940 0000000000000000 ffff88015b927d08 Call Trace: [<ffffffff81c61855>] dump_stack+0x19/0x1b [<ffffffff8108f500>] warn_slowpath_common+0x70/0xa0 ... The function is equivalent to kthread_data() except that the specified @task may not be a kthread or its vfork_done is already cleared rendering struct kthread inaccessible. In the former case, probe_kthread_data() may return any value. In the latter, NULL. This will be used to safely print debug information without affecting synchronization in the normal paths. Writeback has been recently converted to use workqueue instead of its private thread pool implementation. One negative side effect of this conversion is that there's no easy to tell which backing device a writeback work item was working on at the time of task dump, be it sysrq-t, BUG, WARN or whatever, which, according to our writeback brethren, is important in tracking down issues with a lot of mounted file systems on a lot of different devices. This patch restores that information using the new worker description facility. bdi_writeback_workfn() calls set_work_desc() to identify which bdi it's working on. The description is printed out together with the worqueue name and worker function as in the following example dump. WARNING: at fs/fs-writeback.c:1015 bdi_writeback_workfn+0x2b4/0x3c0() Modules linked in: Pid: 28, comm: kworker/u18:0 Not tainted 3.9.0-rc1-work+ torvalds#24 empty empty/S3992 Workqueue: writeback bdi_writeback_workfn (flush-8:16) ffffffff820a3a98 ffff88015b927cb8 ffffffff81c61855 ffff88015b927cf8 ffffffff8108f500 0000000000000000 ffff88007a171948 ffff88007a1716b0 ffff88015b49df00 ffff88015b8d3940 0000000000000000 ffff88015b927d08 Call Trace: [<ffffffff81c61855>] dump_stack+0x19/0x1b [<ffffffff8108f500>] warn_slowpath_common+0x70/0xa0 [<ffffffff8108f54a>] warn_slowpath_null+0x1a/0x20 [<ffffffff81200144>] bdi_writeback_workfn+0x2b4/0x3c0 [<ffffffff810b4c87>] process_one_work+0x1d7/0x660 [<ffffffff810b5c72>] worker_thread+0x122/0x380 [<ffffffff810bdfea>] kthread+0xea/0xf0 [<ffffffff81c6cedc>] ret_from_fork+0x7c/0xb0 Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <[email protected]> Cc: Dave Chinner <[email protected]> Cc: Jan Kara <[email protected]> Cc: Jens Axboe <[email protected]> Cc: Oleg Nesterov <[email protected]> Cc: Ingo Molnar <[email protected]> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <[email protected]>

Currently our IO accessors all use register addressing without offsets, but we could safely use offset addressing (without writeback) to simplify and optimize the generated code. To function correctly under a hypervisor which emulates IO accesses, we must ensure that any faulting/trapped IO access results in an ESR_ELx value with ESR_ELX.ISS.ISV=1 and with the tranfer register described in ESR_ELx.ISS.SRT. This means that we can only use loads/stores of a single general purpose register (or the zero register), and must avoid writeback addressing modes. However, we can use immediate offset addressing modes, as these still provide ESR_ELX.ISS.ISV=1 and a valid ESR_ELx.ISS.SRT when those accesses fault at Stage-2. Currently we only use register addressing without offsets. We use the "r" constraint to place the address into a register, and manually generate the register addressing by surrounding the resulting register operand with square braces, e.g. | static __always_inline void __raw_writeq(u64 val, volatile void __iomem *addr) | { | asm volatile("str %x0, [%1]" : : "rZ" (val), "r" (addr)); | } Due to this, sequences of adjacent accesses need to generate addresses using separate instructions. For example, the following code: | void writeq_zero_8_times(void *ptr) | { | writeq_relaxed(0, ptr + 8 * 0); | writeq_relaxed(0, ptr + 8 * 1); | writeq_relaxed(0, ptr + 8 * 2); | writeq_relaxed(0, ptr + 8 * 3); | writeq_relaxed(0, ptr + 8 * 4); | writeq_relaxed(0, ptr + 8 * 5); | writeq_relaxed(0, ptr + 8 * 6); | writeq_relaxed(0, ptr + 8 * 7); | } ... is compiled to: | <writeq_zero_8_times>: | str xzr, [x0] | add x1, x0, #0x8 | str xzr, [x1] | add x1, x0, #0x10 | str xzr, [x1] | add x1, x0, #0x18 | str xzr, [x1] | add x1, x0, #0x20 | str xzr, [x1] | add x1, x0, #0x28 | str xzr, [x1] | add x1, x0, #0x30 | str xzr, [x1] | add x0, x0, #0x38 | str xzr, [x0] | ret As described above, we could safely use immediate offset addressing, which would allow the ADDs to be folded into the address generation for the STRs, resulting in simpler and smaller generated assembly. We can do this by using the "o" constraint to allow the compiler to generate offset addressing (without writeback) for a memory operand, e.g. | static __always_inline void __raw_writeq(u64 val, volatile void __iomem *addr) | { | volatile u64 __iomem *ptr = addr; | asm volatile("str %x0, %1" : : "rZ" (val), "o" (*ptr)); | } ... which results in the earlier code sequence being compiled to: | <writeq_zero_8_times>: | str xzr, [x0] | str xzr, [x0, torvalds#8] | str xzr, [x0, torvalds#16] | str xzr, [x0, torvalds#24] | str xzr, [x0, torvalds#32] | str xzr, [x0, torvalds#40] | str xzr, [x0, torvalds#48] | str xzr, [x0, torvalds#56] | ret As Will notes at: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-arm-kernel/20240117160528.GA3398@willie-the-truck/ ... some compilers struggle with a plain "o" constraint, so it's preferable to use "Qo", where the additional "Q" constraint permits using non-offset register addressing. This patch modifies our IO write accessors to use "Qo" constraints, resulting in the better code generation described above. The IO read accessors are left as-is because ARM64_WORKAROUND_DEVICE_LOAD_ACQUIRE requires that non-offset register addressing is used, as the LDAR instruction does not support offset addressing. When compiling v6.8-rc1 defconfig with GCC 13.2.0, this saves ~4KiB of text: | [mark@lakrids:~/src/linux]% ls -al vmlinux-* | -rwxr-xr-x 1 mark mark 153960576 Jan 23 12:01 vmlinux-after | -rwxr-xr-x 1 mark mark 153862192 Jan 23 11:57 vmlinux-before | | [mark@lakrids:~/src/linux]% size vmlinux-before vmlinux-after | text data bss dec hex filename | 26708921 16690350 622736 44022007 29fb8f7 vmlinux-before | 26704761 16690414 622736 44017911 29fa8f7 vmlinux-after ... though due to internal alignment of sections, this has no impact on the size of the resulting Image: | [mark@lakrids:~/src/linux]% ls -al Image-* | -rw-r--r-- 1 mark mark 43590144 Jan 23 12:01 Image-after | -rw-r--r-- 1 mark mark 43590144 Jan 23 11:57 Image-before Aside from the better code generation, there should be no functional change as a result of this patch. The idea behind this patch is to delay the freeing of PT entry objects until the TLB flush is done. This patch: - Adds a tlb_flush_waitlist in amdgpu_vm_update_params which will keep the objects that need to be freed after tlb_flush. - Adds PT entries in this list in amdgpu_vm_ptes_update after finding the PT entry. - Changes functionality of amdgpu_vm_pt_free_dfs from (df_search + free) to simply freeing of the BOs, also renames it to amdgpu_vm_pt_free_list to reflect this same. - Exports function amdgpu_vm_pt_free_list to be called directly. - Calls amdgpu_vm_pt_free_list directly from amdgpu_vm_update_range. V2: rebase V4: Addressed review comments from Christian - add only locked PTEs entries in TLB flush waitlist. - do not create a separate function for list flush. - do not create a new lock for TLB flush. - there is no need to wait on tlb_flush_fence exclusively. V5: Addressed review comments from Christian - change the amdgpu_vm_pt_free_dfs's functionality to simple freeing of the objects and rename it. - add all the PTE objects in params->tlb_flush_waitlist - let amdgpu_vm_pt_free_root handle the freeing of BOs independently - call amdgpu_vm_pt_free_list directly V6: Rebase V7: Rebase V8: Added a NULL check to fix this backtrace issue: [ 415.351447] BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000008 [ 415.359245] #PF: supervisor write access in kernel mode [ 415.365081] #PF: error_code(0x0002) - not-present page [ 415.370817] PGD 101259067 P4D 101259067 PUD 10125a067 PMD 0 [ 415.377140] Oops: 0002 [#1] PREEMPT SMP NOPTI [ 415.382004] CPU: 0 PID: 25481 Comm: test_with_MPI.e Tainted: G OE 5.18.2-mi300-build-140423-ubuntu-22.04+ torvalds#24 [ 415.394437] Hardware name: AMD Corporation Sh51p/Sh51p, BIOS RMO1001AS 02/21/2024 [ 415.402797] RIP: 0010:amdgpu_vm_ptes_update+0x6fd/0xa10 [amdgpu] [ 415.409648] Code: 4c 89 ff 4d 8d 66 30 e8 f1 ed ff ff 48 85 db 74 42 48 39 5d a0 74 40 48 8b 53 20 48 8b 4b 18 48 8d 43 18 48 8d 75 b0 4c 89 ff <48 > 89 51 08 48 89 0a 49 8b 56 30 48 89 42 08 48 89 53 18 4c 89 63 [ 415.430621] RSP: 0018:ffffc9000401f990 EFLAGS: 00010287 [ 415.436456] RAX: ffff888147bb82f0 RBX: ffff888147bb82d8 RCX: 0000000000000000 [ 415.444426] RDX: 0000000000000000 RSI: ffffc9000401fa30 RDI: ffff888161f80000 [ 415.452397] RBP: ffffc9000401fa80 R08: 0000000000000000 R09: ffffc9000401fa00 [ 415.460368] R10: 00000007f0cc0000 R11: 00000007f0c85000 R12: ffffc9000401fb20 [ 415.468340] R13: 00000007f0d00000 R14: ffffc9000401faf0 R15: ffff888161f80000 [ 415.476312] FS: 00007f132ff89840(0000) GS:ffff889f87c00000(0000) knlGS:0000000000000000 [ 415.485350] CS: 0010 DS: 0000 ES: 0000 CR0: 0000000080050033 [ 415.491767] CR2: 0000000000000008 CR3: 0000000161d46003 CR4: 0000000000770ef0 [ 415.499738] PKRU: 55555554 [ 415.502750] Call Trace: [ 415.505482] <TASK> [ 415.507825] amdgpu_vm_update_range+0x32a/0x880 [amdgpu] [ 415.513869] amdgpu_vm_clear_freed+0x117/0x250 [amdgpu] [ 415.519814] amdgpu_amdkfd_gpuvm_unmap_memory_from_gpu+0x18c/0x250 [amdgpu] [ 415.527729] kfd_ioctl_unmap_memory_from_gpu+0xed/0x340 [amdgpu] [ 415.534551] kfd_ioctl+0x3b6/0x510 [amdgpu] V9: Addressed review comments from Christian - No NULL check reqd for root PT freeing - Free PT list regardless of needs_flush - Move adding BOs in list in a separate function V10: Added Christian's RB Cc: Christian König <[email protected]> Cc: Alex Deucher <[email protected]> Cc: Felix Kuehling <[email protected]> Cc: Rajneesh Bhardwaj <[email protected]> Acked-by: Felix Kuehling <[email protected]> Acked-by: Rajneesh Bhardwaj <[email protected]> Reviewed-by: Christian König <[email protected]> Tested-by: Rajneesh Bhardwaj <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Shashank Sharma <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Alex Deucher <[email protected]>

The current implementation of the mov instruction with sign extension has the following problems: 1. It clobbers the source register if it is not stacked because it sign extends the source and then moves it to the destination. 2. If the dst_reg is stacked, the current code doesn't write the value back in case of 64-bit mov. 3. There is room for improvement by emitting fewer instructions. The steps for fixing this and the instructions emitted by the JIT are explained below with examples in all combinations: Case A: offset == 32: ===================== Case A.1: src and dst are stacked registers: -------------------------------------------- 1. Load src_lo into tmp_lo 2. Store tmp_lo into dst_lo 3. Sign extend tmp_lo into tmp_hi 4. Store tmp_hi to dst_hi Example: r3 = (s32)r3 r3 is a stacked register ldr r6, [r11, #-16] // Load r3_lo into tmp_lo // str to dst_lo is not emitted because src_lo == dst_lo asr r7, r6, torvalds#31 // Sign extend tmp_lo into tmp_hi str r7, [r11, #-12] // Store tmp_hi into r3_hi Case A.2: src is stacked but dst is not: ---------------------------------------- 1. Load src_lo into dst_lo 2. Sign extend dst_lo into dst_hi Example: r6 = (s32)r3 r6 maps to {ARM_R5, ARM_R4} and r3 is stacked ldr r4, [r11, #-16] // Load r3_lo into r6_lo asr r5, r4, torvalds#31 // Sign extend r6_lo into r6_hi Case A.3: src is not stacked but dst is stacked: ------------------------------------------------ 1. Store src_lo into dst_lo 2. Sign extend src_lo into tmp_hi 3. Store tmp_hi to dst_hi Example: r3 = (s32)r6 r3 is stacked and r6 maps to {ARM_R5, ARM_R4} str r4, [r11, #-16] // Store r6_lo to r3_lo asr r7, r4, torvalds#31 // Sign extend r6_lo into tmp_hi str r7, [r11, #-12] // Store tmp_hi to dest_hi Case A.4: Both src and dst are not stacked: ------------------------------------------- 1. Mov src_lo into dst_lo 2. Sign extend src_lo into dst_hi Example: (bf) r6 = (s32)r6 r6 maps to {ARM_R5, ARM_R4} // Mov not emitted because dst == src asr r5, r4, torvalds#31 // Sign extend r6_lo into r6_hi Case B: offset != 32: ===================== Case B.1: src and dst are stacked registers: -------------------------------------------- 1. Load src_lo into tmp_lo 2. Sign extend tmp_lo according to offset. 3. Store tmp_lo into dst_lo 4. Sign extend tmp_lo into tmp_hi 5. Store tmp_hi to dst_hi Example: r9 = (s8)r3 r9 and r3 are both stacked registers ldr r6, [r11, #-16] // Load r3_lo into tmp_lo lsl r6, r6, torvalds#24 // Sign extend tmp_lo asr r6, r6, torvalds#24 // .. str r6, [r11, #-56] // Store tmp_lo to r9_lo asr r7, r6, torvalds#31 // Sign extend tmp_lo to tmp_hi str r7, [r11, #-52] // Store tmp_hi to r9_hi Case B.2: src is stacked but dst is not: ---------------------------------------- 1. Load src_lo into dst_lo 2. Sign extend dst_lo according to offset. 3. Sign extend tmp_lo into dst_hi Example: r6 = (s8)r3 r6 maps to {ARM_R5, ARM_R4} and r3 is stacked ldr r4, [r11, #-16] // Load r3_lo to r6_lo lsl r4, r4, torvalds#24 // Sign extend r6_lo asr r4, r4, torvalds#24 // .. asr r5, r4, torvalds#31 // Sign extend r6_lo into r6_hi Case B.3: src is not stacked but dst is stacked: ------------------------------------------------ 1. ARM64 defines THREAD_INFO_IN_TASK which means the cpu id can be found from current_thread_info()->cpu. Implement raw_smp_processor_id() using the above. This decreases the number of emitted instructions like in the following example: Dump of assembler code for function bpf_get_smp_processor_id: 0xffff8000802cd608 <+0>: nop 0xffff8000802cd60c <+4>: nop 0xffff8000802cd610 <+8>: adrp x0, 0xffff800082138000 0xffff8000802cd614 <+12>: mrs x1, tpidr_el1 0xffff8000802cd618 <+16>: add x0, x0, #0x8 0xffff8000802cd61c <+20>: ldrsw x0, [x0, x1] 0xffff8000802cd620 <+24>: ret After this patch: Dump of assembler code for function bpf_get_smp_processor_id: 0xffff8000802c9130 <+0>: nop 0xffff8000802c9134 <+4>: nop 0xffff8000802c9138 <+8>: mrs x0, sp_el0 0xffff8000802c913c <+12>: ldr w0, [x0, torvalds#24] 0xffff8000802c9140 <+16>: ret A microbenchmark[1] was built to measure the performance improvement provided by this change. Historically, arm64 implemented raw_smp_processor_id() as a read of current_thread_info()->cpu. This changed when arm64 moved thread_info into task struct, as at the time CONFIG_THREAD_INFO_IN_TASK made core code use thread_struct::cpu for the cpu number, and due to header dependencies prevented using this in raw_smp_processor_id(). As a workaround, we moved to using a percpu variable in commit: 57c8295 ("arm64: make cpu number a percpu variable") Since then, thread_info::cpu was reintroduced, and core code was made to use this in commits: 001430c ("arm64: add CPU field to struct thread_info") bcf9033 ("sched: move CPU field back into thread_info if THREAD_INFO_IN_TASK=y") Consequently it is possible to use current_thread_info()->cpu again. This decreases the number of emitted instructions like in the following example: Dump of assembler code for function bpf_get_smp_processor_id: 0xffff8000802cd608 <+0>: nop 0xffff8000802cd60c <+4>: nop 0xffff8000802cd610 <+8>: adrp x0, 0xffff800082138000 0xffff8000802cd614 <+12>: mrs x1, tpidr_el1 0xffff8000802cd618 <+16>: add x0, x0, #0x8 0xffff8000802cd61c <+20>: ldrsw x0, [x0, x1] 0xffff8000802cd620 <+24>: ret After this patch: Dump of assembler code for function bpf_get_smp_processor_id: 0xffff8000802c9130 <+0>: nop 0xffff8000802c9134 <+4>: nop 0xffff8000802c9138 <+8>: mrs x0, sp_el0 0xffff8000802c913c <+12>: ldr w0, [x0, torvalds#24] 0xffff8000802c9140 <+16>: ret A microbenchmark[1] was built to measure the performance improvement provided by this change. Inline calls to bpf_get_smp_processor_id() helper in the JIT by emitting a read from struct thread_info. The SP_EL0 system register holds the pointer to the task_struct and thread_info is the first member of this struct. We can read the cpu number from the thread_info. Here is how the ARM64 JITed assembly changes after this commit: ARM64 JIT =========== BEFORE AFTER -------- ------- int cpu = bpf_get_smp_processor_id(); int cpu = bpf_get_smp_processor_id(); mov x10, #0xfffffffffffff4d0 mrs x10, sp_el0 movk x10, #0x802b, lsl torvalds#16 ldr w7, [x10, torvalds#24] movk x10, #0x8000, lsl torvalds#32 blr x10 add x7, x0, #0x0 Performance improvement using benchmark[1] ./benchs/run_bench_trigger.sh glob-arr-inc arr-inc hash-inc +---------------+-------------------+-------------------+--------------+ | Name | Before | After | % change | |---------------+-------------------+-------------------+--------------| | glob-arr-inc | 23.380 ± 1.675M/s | 25.893 ± 0.026M/s | + 10.74% | | arr-inc | 23.928 ± 0.034M/s | 25.213 ± 0.063M/s | + 5.37% | | hash-inc | 12.352 ± 0.005M/s | 12.609 ± 0.013M/s | + 2.08% | +---------------+-------------------+-------------------+--------------+ [1] anakryiko@8dec900975ef Signed-off-by: Puranjay Mohan <[email protected]> Acked-by: Andrii Nakryiko <[email protected]> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/[email protected] Signed-off-by: Alexei Starovoitov <[email protected]>

Puranjay Mohan says: ==================== bpf: Inline helpers in arm64 and riscv JITs Changes in v5 -> v6: arm64 v5: https://lore.kernel.org/all/[email protected]/ riscv v2: https://lore.kernel.org/all/[email protected]/ - Combine riscv and arm64 changes in single series - Some coding style fixes Changes in v4 -> v5: v4: https://lore.kernel.org/all/[email protected]/ - Implement the inlining of the bpf_get_smp_processor_id() in the JIT. NOTE: This needs to be based on: https://lore.kernel.org/all/[email protected]/ to be built. Manual run of bpf-ci with this series rebased on above: kernel-patches/bpf#6929 Changes in v3 -> v4: v3: https://lore.kernel.org/all/[email protected]/ - Fix coding style issue related to C89 standards. Changes in v2 -> v3: v2: https://lore.kernel.org/all/[email protected]/ - Fixed the xlated dump of percpu mov to "r0 = &(void __percpu *)(r0)" - Made ARM64 and x86-64 use the same code for inlining. The only difference that remains is the per-cpu address of the cpu_number. Changes in v1 -> v2: v1: https://lore.kernel.org/all/[email protected]/ - Add a patch to inline bpf_get_smp_processor_id() - Fix an issue in MRS instruction encoding as pointed out by Will - Remove CONFIG_SMP check because arm64 kernel always compiles with CONFIG_SMP This series adds the support of internal only per-CPU instructions and inlines the bpf_get_smp_processor_id() helper call for ARM64 and RISC-V BPF JITs. Here is an example of calls to bpf_get_smp_processor_id() and percpu_array_map_lookup_elem() before and after this series on ARM64. [ Upstream commit c6f4850 ] The current implementation of the mov instruction with sign extension has the following problems: 1. It clobbers the source register if it is not stacked because it sign extends the source and then moves it to the destination. 2. If the dst_reg is stacked, the current code doesn't write the value back in case of 64-bit mov. 3. There is room for improvement by emitting fewer instructions. The steps for fixing this and the instructions emitted by the JIT are explained below with examples in all combinations: Case A: offset == 32: ===================== Case A.1: src and dst are stacked registers: -------------------------------------------- 1. Load src_lo into tmp_lo 2. Store tmp_lo into dst_lo 3. Sign extend tmp_lo into tmp_hi 4. Store tmp_hi to dst_hi Example: r3 = (s32)r3 r3 is a stacked register ldr r6, [r11, #-16] // Load r3_lo into tmp_lo // str to dst_lo is not emitted because src_lo == dst_lo asr r7, r6, torvalds#31 // Sign extend tmp_lo into tmp_hi str r7, [r11, #-12] // Store tmp_hi into r3_hi Case A.2: src is stacked but dst is not: ---------------------------------------- 1. Load src_lo into dst_lo 2. Sign extend dst_lo into dst_hi Example: r6 = (s32)r3 r6 maps to {ARM_R5, ARM_R4} and r3 is stacked ldr r4, [r11, #-16] // Load r3_lo into r6_lo asr r5, r4, torvalds#31 // Sign extend r6_lo into r6_hi Case A.3: src is not stacked but dst is stacked: ------------------------------------------------ 1. Store src_lo into dst_lo 2. Sign extend src_lo into tmp_hi 3. Store tmp_hi to dst_hi Example: r3 = (s32)r6 r3 is stacked and r6 maps to {ARM_R5, ARM_R4} str r4, [r11, #-16] // Store r6_lo to r3_lo asr r7, r4, torvalds#31 // Sign extend r6_lo into tmp_hi str r7, [r11, #-12] // Store tmp_hi to dest_hi Case A.4: Both src and dst are not stacked: ------------------------------------------- 1. Mov src_lo into dst_lo 2. Sign extend src_lo into dst_hi Example: (bf) r6 = (s32)r6 r6 maps to {ARM_R5, ARM_R4} // Mov not emitted because dst == src asr r5, r4, torvalds#31 // Sign extend r6_lo into r6_hi Case B: offset != 32: ===================== Case B.1: src and dst are stacked registers: -------------------------------------------- 1. Load src_lo into tmp_lo 2. Sign extend tmp_lo according to offset. 3. Store tmp_lo into dst_lo 4. Sign extend tmp_lo into tmp_hi 5. Store tmp_hi to dst_hi Example: r9 = (s8)r3 r9 and r3 are both stacked registers ldr r6, [r11, #-16] // Load r3_lo into tmp_lo lsl r6, r6, torvalds#24 // Sign extend tmp_lo asr r6, r6, torvalds#24 // .. str r6, [r11, #-56] // Store tmp_lo to r9_lo asr r7, r6, torvalds#31 // Sign extend tmp_lo to tmp_hi str r7, [r11, #-52] // Store tmp_hi to r9_hi Case B.2: src is stacked but dst is not: ---------------------------------------- 1. Load src_lo into dst_lo 2. Sign extend dst_lo according to offset. 3. Sign extend tmp_lo into dst_hi Example: r6 = (s8)r3 r6 maps to {ARM_R5, ARM_R4} and r3 is stacked ldr r4, [r11, #-16] // Load r3_lo to r6_lo lsl r4, r4, torvalds#24 // Sign extend r6_lo asr r4, r4, torvalds#24 // .. asr r5, r4, torvalds#31 // Sign extend r6_lo into r6_hi Case B.3: src is not stacked but dst is stacked: ------------------------------------------------ 1. Historically, arm64 implemented raw_smp_processor_id() as a read of current_thread_info()->cpu. This changed when arm64 moved thread_info into task struct, as at the time CONFIG_THREAD_INFO_IN_TASK made core code use thread_struct::cpu for the cpu number, and due to header dependencies prevented using this in raw_smp_processor_id(). As a workaround, we moved to using a percpu variable in commit: 57c8295 ("arm64: make cpu number a percpu variable") Since then, thread_info::cpu was reintroduced, and core code was made to use this in commits: 001430c ("arm64: add CPU field to struct thread_info") bcf9033 ("sched: move CPU field back into thread_info if THREAD_INFO_IN_TASK=y") Consequently it is possible to use current_thread_info()->cpu again. This decreases the number of emitted instructions like in the following example: Dump of assembler code for function bpf_get_smp_processor_id: 0xffff8000802cd608 <+0>: nop 0xffff8000802cd60c <+4>: nop 0xffff8000802cd610 <+8>: adrp x0, 0xffff800082138000 0xffff8000802cd614 <+12>: mrs x1, tpidr_el1 0xffff8000802cd618 <+16>: add x0, x0, #0x8 0xffff8000802cd61c <+20>: ldrsw x0, [x0, x1] 0xffff8000802cd620 <+24>: ret After this patch: Dump of assembler code for function bpf_get_smp_processor_id: 0xffff8000802c9130 <+0>: nop 0xffff8000802c9134 <+4>: nop 0xffff8000802c9138 <+8>: mrs x0, sp_el0 0xffff8000802c913c <+12>: ldr w0, [x0, torvalds#24] 0xffff8000802c9140 <+16>: ret A microbenchmark[1] was built to measure the performance improvement provided by this change. It calls the following function given number of times and finds the runtime overhead: static noinline int get_cpu_id(void) { return smp_processor_id(); } Run the benchmark like: modprobe smp_processor_id nr_function_calls=1000000000 +--------------------------+------------------------+ | | Number of Calls | Time taken | +--------+-----------------+------------------------+ | Before | 1000000000 | 1602888401ns | +--------+-----------------+------------------------+ | After | 1000000000 | 1206212658ns | +--------+-----------------+------------------------+ | Difference (decrease) | 396675743ns (24.74%) | +---------------------------------------------------+ Remove the percpu variable cpu_number as it is used only in set_smp_ipi_range() as a dummy variable to be passed to ipi_handler(). Use irq_stat in place of cpu_number here like arm32. The dead lock can happen if we try to use printk(), such as a call of SCHED_WARN_ON(), during the rq->__lock is held. The printk() will try to print the message to the console, and the console driver can call queue_work_on(), which will try to obtain rq->__lock again. This means that any WARN during the kernel function that hold the rq->__lock, such as schedule(), sched_ttwu_pending(), etc, can cause dead lock. Following is the call trace of the deadlock case that I encounter: PID: 0 TASK: ff36bfda010c8000 CPU: 156 COMMAND: "swapper/156" #0 crash_nmi_callback+30 #1 nmi_handle+85 #2 default_do_nmi+66 #3 exc_nmi+291 #4 end_repeat_nmi+22 [exception RIP: native_queued_spin_lock_slowpath+96] #5 native_queued_spin_lock_slowpath+96 torvalds#6 _raw_spin_lock+30 torvalds#7 ttwu_queue+111 torvalds#8 try_to_wake_up+375 torvalds#9 __queue_work+462 torvalds#10 queue_work_on+32 torvalds#11 soft_cursor+420 torvalds#12 bit_cursor+898 torvalds#13 hide_cursor+39 torvalds#14 vt_console_print+995 torvalds#15 call_console_drivers.constprop.0+204 torvalds#16 console_unlock+374 torvalds#17 vprintk_emit+280 torvalds#18 printk+88 torvalds#19 __warn_printk+71 torvalds#20 enqueue_task_fair+1779 torvalds#21 activate_task+102 torvalds#22 ttwu_do_activate+155 torvalds#23 sched_ttwu_pending+177 torvalds#24 flush_smp_call_function_from_idle+42 torvalds#25 do_idle+161 torvalds#26 cpu_startup_entry+25 torvalds#27 secondary_startup_64_no_verify+194 Fix this by using __printk_safe_enter()/__printk_safe_exit() in rq_pin_lock()/rq_unpin_lock(). The idea behind this patch is to delay the freeing of PT entry objects until the TLB flush is done. This patch: - Adds a tlb_flush_waitlist in amdgpu_vm_update_params which will keep the objects that need to be freed after tlb_flush. - Adds PT entries in this list in amdgpu_vm_ptes_update after finding the PT entry. - Changes functionality of amdgpu_vm_pt_free_dfs from (df_search + free) to simply freeing of the BOs, also renames it to amdgpu_vm_pt_free_list to reflect this same. - Exports function amdgpu_vm_pt_free_list to be called directly. - Calls amdgpu_vm_pt_free_list directly from amdgpu_vm_update_range. V2: rebase V4: Addressed review comments from Christian - add only locked PTEs entries in TLB flush waitlist. - do not create a separate function for list flush. - do not create a new lock for TLB flush. - there is no need to wait on tlb_flush_fence exclusively. V5: Addressed review comments from Christian - change the amdgpu_vm_pt_free_dfs's functionality to simple freeing of the objects and rename it. - add all the PTE objects in params->tlb_flush_waitlist - let amdgpu_vm_pt_free_root handle the freeing of BOs independently - call amdgpu_vm_pt_free_list directly V6: Rebase V7: Rebase V8: Added a NULL check to fix this backtrace issue: [ 415.351447] BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000008 [ 415.359245] #PF: supervisor write access in kernel mode [ 415.365081] #PF: error_code(0x0002) - not-present page [ 415.370817] PGD 101259067 P4D 101259067 PUD 10125a067 PMD 0 [ 415.377140] Oops: 0002 [#1] PREEMPT SMP NOPTI [ 415.382004] CPU: 0 PID: 25481 Comm: test_with_MPI.e Tainted: G OE 5.18.2-mi300-build-140423-ubuntu-22.04+ torvalds#24 [ 415.394437] Hardware name: AMD Corporation Sh51p/Sh51p, BIOS RMO1001AS 02/21/2024 [ 415.402797] RIP: 0010:amdgpu_vm_ptes_update+0x6fd/0xa10 [amdgpu] [ 415.409648] Code: 4c 89 ff 4d 8d 66 30 e8 f1 ed ff ff 48 85 db 74 42 48 39 5d a0 74 40 48 8b 53 20 48 8b 4b 18 48 8d 43 18 48 8d 75 b0 4c 89 ff <48 > 89 51 08 48 89 0a 49 8b 56 30 48 89 42 08 48 89 53 18 4c 89 63 [ 415.430621] RSP: 0018:ffffc9000401f990 EFLAGS: 00010287 [ 415.436456] RAX: ffff888147bb82f0 RBX: ffff888147bb82d8 RCX: 0000000000000000 [ 415.444426] RDX: 0000000000000000 RSI: ffffc9000401fa30 RDI: ffff888161f80000 [ 415.452397] RBP: ffffc9000401fa80 R08: 0000000000000000 R09: ffffc9000401fa00 [ 415.460368] R10: 00000007f0cc0000 R11: 00000007f0c85000 R12: ffffc9000401fb20 [ 415.468340] R13: 00000007f0d00000 R14: ffffc9000401faf0 R15: ffff888161f80000 [ 415.476312] FS: 00007f132ff89840(0000) GS:ffff889f87c00000(0000) knlGS:0000000000000000 [ 415.485350] CS: 0010 DS: 0000 ES: 0000 CR0: 0000000080050033 [ 415.491767] CR2: 0000000000000008 CR3: 0000000161d46003 CR4: 0000000000770ef0 [ 415.499738] PKRU: 55555554 [ 415.502750] Call Trace: [ 415.505482] <TASK> [ 415.507825] amdgpu_vm_update_range+0x32a/0x880 [amdgpu] [ 415.513869] amdgpu_vm_clear_freed+0x117/0x250 [amdgpu] [ 415.519814] amdgpu_amdkfd_gpuvm_unmap_memory_from_gpu+0x18c/0x250 [amdgpu] [ 415.527729] kfd_ioctl_unmap_memory_from_gpu+0xed/0x340 [amdgpu] [ 415.534551] kfd_ioctl+0x3b6/0x510 [amdgpu] V9: Addressed review comments from Christian - No NULL check reqd for root PT freeing - Free PT list regardless of needs_flush - Move adding BOs in list in a separate function V10: Added Christian's RB V11: squash in list fix Cc: Christian König <[email protected]> Cc: Alex Deucher <[email protected]> Cc: Felix Kuehling <[email protected]> Cc: Rajneesh Bhardwaj <[email protected]> Acked-by: Felix Kuehling <[email protected]> Acked-by: Rajneesh Bhardwaj <[email protected]> Reviewed-by: Christian König <[email protected]> Tested-by: Rajneesh Bhardwaj <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Shashank Sharma <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Alex Deucher <[email protected]>
