Are you sure it looks ok for small n of files?
This can be merged, but I thought of implementing this with "only appear once we do 2+ iterations" like you suggested.

UPDATE: to be clear - I'm not suggesting you implement "only appear once we do 2+ iterations" in this PR, whatever changes you make here will get overriden by my PR either way. So - if it looks ok with small n of files, we can merge this PR; and if it doesn't - let's wait for my PR to implement "only appear once we do 2+ iterations" instead.

No need to, I have this exact change in one of my stashes, I just decided against it for UI reasons!
We can merge this PR if we want to enable it in main before my PR drops.

I think it's a different problem (albeit related), it would make more sense to work on it on a different PR IMO (my preference would be on a dedicated PR, but I have no objection to merge it as part of your PR)
