Reflow Update

Scott provided a brief status update on updated Reflow Understanding doc. All the new graphics have been added. Scott is working with Patrick on examples. Some of questions being asked were resolved in the Google doc drafting, so so the preview is developing, quite nicely, as expected.

CFC - WCAG 2.1/2.2 errata

On Monday 11/4, Alastair noticed CFC - WCAG 2.1/2.2 errata. There were some conversations and feedback on list and in PR threads, with all but one issue (transaction amount) being fully resolved.

Transaction Amount

We have concurrence that, back in 2018, it was error to include transaction-amount in the 2.1 appendix Input Purposes for User Interface Components. This oversight hasn't been raised before, not even in the context of the WCAG 2.2 work, presumably since implementations remain scarce.

From Alastair's email to list:

  • In general it’s just confusing to include something in the list that shouldn’t be used.
  • It’s confusion of inclusion vs the effects of updating normatively referenced text.

Please also see Mike's penultimate comment in the conversation thread. On the call, there seemed to be more support for retaining the status quo, as compared to the alternative (i.e., risking a formal objection).

If we do not make the correction, we can expect the question to keep being raised. Patrick offered to draft an update to Understanding which might help with that, without flat-out admitted a mistake.

Review ‘For discussion’ items

Mike highlighted minor change to Editorial suggestions for consistent links to definitions and capitalization #3038 which was sent to AGWG back in July. One instance of "block of text" linking to the defined term was reverted (so, it is just the three words). Returned to Errata for CFC column.

Ken provided some background on Eleventy build: Support generating WCAG 2.1 docs from main branch #4007 back porting from TR. Dan pointed out that ACT Rules made the mindful decision to only maintains one version. Discussion around need to maintaining two versions of Understanding. With 2.1 referenced in regulation, W3C needs to ensure all the Understanding documents are relevant. This PR is part of getting us to "one branch for all versions of Understanding docs" but the WCAG-2.1 branch still serves as a marker for 2.1-specific guidelines history (i.e. TR). For WCAG 2.1 and 2.2, the working repo is built from TR space (not the other way around, as one might reasonably expect). The working repo has minimal duplication of files, but this PR goes a long way to smoothing out the build and publication processes. Note that, despite its length and complexity, this PR is strictly editorial. Sent for AG approval, on 11/6.

Review ‘Drafted’ items

Discussed Update ARIA11 to address issue #1308 #2339 closing ARIA11: Add clause about form role needing an accessible label #1308. This PR was sent to AG on 10 October. Group concurred that both are obsolete. Patrick refers to close this PR rather than try and address all the churn. Left in For discussion, until issue is closed and branches deleted. (Mike)

Discussed link directly to new supplemental guidance #2296. Ken will check with Shawn exactly with what change should be. May be too late to get into queue before republication of 2.2. Stays as Drafted.

Discussion on Update H95.html #2150 moved to Ready for approval. Sidebar conversation about maintenance burden of external links. Patrick will double check and use his discretion as to if the links are stable enough.

Discussion on Update F103 to remove progressbar as it's not an implicit live region #1021. Patrick volunteered to double check, then moved to Ready for Approval.

Quick discussion on Update G195 - removal of last line of test (low contrast OK if focus ring > 2px thick) #3686 Patrick volunteered to double check, then moved to Ready for Approval.

Quick discussion on Update F2.html #4128 and left as Drafted. Mike will continue to iterate.
