Term Definition
co-owner Owners of a given plan can designate "Co-owners" on a plan-by-plan basis. These individuals have the same rights (editing, downloading, sharing) as owners. They can be invited on the "Share" tab when editing a plan. Co-owners will receive an email invitation and must create an account in the DMPTool to gain access to the plan.
customization Admins can add institution-specific items to funder templates. This includes additional questions, actionable links, example responses, and default responses.
default answer An answer for a given question. Default responses are provided as customizations by administrators.
editor A permissions setting that plan owners can assign to others from the "Share" tab. Editors can add comments and make changes to answers. They will receive an email invitation and must create an account in the DMPTool to gain access to the plan.
entity_id Setting in the "Organization details", visible to administrators only. Shibboleth endpoint registered with the InCommon Federation. This can only be edited by the DMPTool Administrator. Contact us with any questions.
example answer An example of an answer to a given funder question, not necessarily intended to be used as a response. Example responses are provided as customizations by administrators.
funder Organization that requires some type of data management plan, typically a US federal funding agency (NSF, NIH, DOE) or private foundation (Sloan, Moore)
guidance Text and links to external resources provided by the DMPTool (or a local administrator) to help answer the funder questions. Organizational administrators can create guidance that will be displayed to researchers while writing a plan.
links URLs to resources or materials that may help answer a question. Links can be added in the context of guidance, templates, example answers, etc. using the text editor.
ORCID Personal digital identifier that helps researchers distinguish and identify themselves. Available from https://orcid.org/ and can be linked to any account on the Edit profile page.
organizational administrator Institutional/organizational role that can assign additional DMPTool organizational administrators, plus perform all administrative functions (create templates, guidance, provide feedback on plans, etc)
owner The plan creator who originally initiated the data management plan. Owners can edit, share, make a copy, download, or remove plans. They can also designate plan co-owners, who will then have the same rights, or invite others to have editing or read-only access.
public plan a plan created using the DMPTool that has been made publicly visible by its owner. Note that public plans are not checked for quality or content.
published template A published template will appear as an optional template when a researcher creates a plan. Published funder templates are visible publicly (to anyone logged into the tool and on the main Funder requirements page. Published organizational templates are created by administrators; these are available to researchers who select that organizational affiliation and do not choose a funder in the create plan wizard.
read only Owners and co-owners can invite others to have read-only permissions for their plan. This enables invited individuals to read and add comments. When a researcher requests feedback on a plan, this is the level of permission granted to administrators.
request feedback An optional setting that administrators can enable on the "Organization details" page. If enabled, users from that organization will be able to submit plans for feedback in the form of comments provided by admins. Administrators will receive a notification email and be able to access submitted plans in read-only mode from the "Plans" page in the Admin features menu.
shibboleth domain Setting on the "Organization details" page, visible to administrators only. This can only be edited by the DMPTool Administrator. Contact us with any questions.
template outline for a data management plan based on funder requirements (i.e., their questions). Template text is taken directly from policy documents and guidance provided by the funder.
test plan A mock data management plan created for testing, practice, or educational purposes. Test plans are set to private visibility by default. If teaching a course or workshop, users should check the box "Mock project for testing, practice, or educational purposes" to avoid cluttering the public and organizational lists so researchers can find real sample plans more easily.
unpublished template An unpublished template will not appear as an optional template when a researcher creates a plan. This may be because the template is no longer in use, or it has not been completed (finalized) by an administrator. Administrators can edit published templates, but must remember to publish the changes so that they are reflected in the template.
visibility Each plan created has three visibility options. (1) Public: anyone can view the plan. (2) Organizational: anyone logged in from your institution/organization can view the plan. (3) Private: only owners and co-owners can view the plan. Note: public or organizational visibility are intended for finished plans. Users must answer at least 50% of the questions to enable these options. Test plans are set to private visibility by default.
