Why OpenIoT

OpenIoT is a unique open source blueprint middleware infrastructure for developing and integrating non-trivial IoT applications. Here are some good reasons to download, use, and contribute to this project:

  • OpenIoT supports virtually any sensor type available: OpenIoT enables and facilitates the integration and use of virtually any (internet-connected) sensor to IoT appllications. It supports both physical sensors (e.g., cameras) and virtual sensors (e.g., signal processing algorithms, social media streams). OpenIoT provides already support for several devices, but integrators/solution developers can implement support for additional devices with only a fair effort.
  • OpenIoT blends IoT with semantic technologies: OpenIoT provides the means to use semantically rich descriptions about sensor data and metadata, thanks it its compliance to the W3C SSN ontology. This provides strong interoprability capabilities (across different heterogeneous sensors), as well as powerful capabilities for dynamically discovering and using sensors and their data at a large scale.
  • OpenIoT support IoT/Cloud Integration and Convergence: OpenIoT offers integration of data streams within cloud infrastructures, thereby boosting the convergence of IoT and cloud computing technologies. Also, OpenIoT supports the deployment of on-demand utility based services in-line with the main principles of cloud computing.
  • OpenIoT is based on proven/available open source technologies: OpenIoT builds on proven open source technologies for IoT/WSN such as the GSN (Global Sensor Networks) middleware. By using OpenIoT you gain access to enhanced versions of these technologies.
  • Business Friendly License: OpenIoT is available under a business friendly license, thereby facilitating the business objectives of enterprises (notably SMEs) wishing to use for solution development/deployment.
  • OpenIoT is a blueprint for IoT solutions: OpenIoT is an (open source) blueprint for the development and deployment of semantic cloud-based IoT solutions. By accessing/using OpenIoT, integrators and solution providers can get valuable insights in the development of IoT solutions. Furthermore, researchers and students can use it for learning and understanding the practical aspects of IoT.
