For an app I'm writing, I want to be able to read / write data at a given offset in an arbitrarily large (multi-gigabyte) file.

There is no way to do this with the current Dart VM File / FileInputStream / FileOutputStream APIs.

Please add a way of doing this.

One way would be to allow optional offset and length arguments to File.openInputStream and File.openOutputStream.

Another way would be to add a "seek" protocol to FileInputStream and FileOutputStream

Another way would be to implement something like "go"'s ReadAt and WriteAt interfaces.

The InputStream and OutputStream interfaces are designed for reading data sequentially. For random access to files handling of positioning before reading or writing should be part of the File interface.

r1573 and r1574 adds support for File.setPosition. Thanks for the report. :)
