Description & motivation

This feels like too small a thing to both with a CHANGELOG.md entry?

• I followed guidelines to ensure that my changes will work on "non-core" adapters by:

Closing in favor of #555 since it has fewer lines of code changes.

We could do a separate PR if there's whitespace we need/want to cleanup though.
