Agenda for Technical Advisory Group meeting

Date: November 20, 2017, 1pm-3pm PST (web conference)

Slides and report with the case study are posted at https://github.com/lbl-srg/obc/tree/master/meetings/2017-11-tag

See below agenda for dial-in information.

Agenda items

Review of case study where we tested an ASHRAE Guideline 36 control sequence. See http://obc.lbl.gov/specification/example.html (as html format) or https://github.com/lbl-srg/obc/blob/master/meetings/2017-11-tag/cdl_report.pdf (in pdf format).

  1. Problem statement and methodology.
  2. Main results.
  3. Applications beyond OpenBuildingControl project.
  4. Verification tests
  5. Discussion of next case study (for summer/fall 2018).

Discussion of next steps, in particular export of control sequences for specification and for implementation in actual control systems.

Introduction

Michael gave an overview of the presentation and invited the TAG to discuss verification approach and future development after the presentation

CDL Library

G36 Implementation

Michael presented the slides and summarized the process of collaboration with Brent in the process of sequence modeling. He explained the library package contents. Paul expressed concern about the nomenclature and terminology, since Controller model lacks VAV in the name. Michael explained the continuous testing framework.

Case study

Verification

Michael presents the verification tool requirements: energy code regulation, set point tracking, performance according to specification and initiates discussion on the:

  • validation conditions and requirements
  • metrics
  • previous work available, which might provide useful information: Paul brought up RP 1587 control quality factor [Alabama], Brent mentioned VAV performance assessment technique, ASHRAE initiated a RP that develops a test procedure

Larger group discusses instabilities that exist within the G36 sequences themselves and brought up tuning. Michael concludes by reminding the TAG that tuning is a bigger problem outside of the scope of the project.

Control design tool

Michael seeks feedback from team on functional verification tool. Issues brought up while discussing the control design tool configuration:

  • Testing during commissioning
  • Tool selection: Paul elaborates on tools suggested in the presentation (verification Volttron, closed loop control in Sedona). Long discussion on the selection of appropriate tools developed. Michael expressed concern about limiting the project to any individual tool. Discussion developed on adaptation of CDL in old hardware or "revolutionizing" BAS to be extendable for grid integration, etc. Paul said we could select a control platform that was upgraded or newly developed in the last few years, which would include Sedona, Schneider and Distech Controls, but the latter two are not open source. Michael will reflect on this and discuss with Marina Sofos.

Paul brings up semantic tagging.

At this time TAG prioritizes translation to at least one commercial tool instead of facade and lighting controls. Facade control is most of the time proprietary and shipped with facade system.

Michael shows timeline and seeks sequences on facade and primary systems.

Action items

Primary systems: ASHRAE 1711 - Taylor engineering is about to collect sequences from various sources in about a year and a half, but they have some sequences.

Find more information on lighting and facade control systems, decide on implementation. Michael seeks proof of concept for one manufacturer.

Phil said to provide old performance testing. Brent said to provide old papers on testing and validation methodologies.
