Minutes

Progress update (20 min)

Michael Wetter explained the project's milestones and progress:

Phase 1: extension approved by DOE to end in October 2020, CEC approval expected soon. Waiting for official approval from DOE for phase 2, PNNL will join the team.

Project Phase 2 goals:

  • More control sequences for boiler, DOAS, Radiant system, MPC, fault detection
  • Make CDL an ASHRAE and ISO standard
  • Provide the control vendors with assistance to develop translators for their particular control lines
  • Work on the connection with BRICK/Haystack models, create a conversion tool
  • Streamline communication of control sequences

Primary Sequence implementation:

Milica Grahovac presented the implementation approaches: sequences are implemented in a modular way and then generalized.
Questions: sequence breakdown to allow other types of controls? Michael suggested discussing with Dave Robin on the implementation of breakpoints on the sequences (example: Freeze protection).

Case Study:

  • Waiting for the sequence to be implemented, hopefully, fall 2019.
  • Discussion with Rich to be scheduled to learn more about the implementation process and understand what questions should be answered.

Control Sequence selection (35 min)

Proposing CDL as an ASHRAE Standard

  • CDL can be seen as a digital twin for commissioning and verification for control vendors to make sure they conform to the guideline sequences.
  • Steve Taylor will be leading the standard committee.
  • The standardization would not be static and allow vendors to extend it. The standard can evolve as a language extension.
  • Standardization allows stability and consensus.

Guideline 36 reference implementation in CDL

  • Modeling the sequences is a challenge because even if the documentation is correct, the implementation doesn't seem to be tested.
  • The ambition is to have a close formulation between English language and CDL application.
  • Legal copyright matters need to be discussed with ASHRAE. Term sheet in review at LBL before being shared with ASHRAE.

CDL translation to English and to a product line

  • Dave Robin detailed his progress with the conversion from CDL to ALC EIKON: created a program that reads the JSON, converts to an executable sequence and maps with CDL Block types.
  • It's challenging to develop graphics mapping because of layout (blocks, hierarchical links) consistency issues between languages.

Configuration tool (20 min)

Antoine Gautier presented the control sequence selection and configuration tool.
Comments:

  • People are familiar with the interface of CtrlSpecBuilder
  • Could be interesting to create a survey to collect requirements

Commercialization plan (15 min)

  • It would be helpful to have more feedback

Next Steps (5 min)

  • ASHRAE winter meeting (deadline for program discussion August 2) - 3 speakers (Steve, Paul, and Michael)

Identified conferences:

Other discussions :

  • Think about the connection between OBC, demand flexibility and Grid-interactive Efficient Buildings (GEB)
  • How to decide between MPC and rule-based controls?
  • Organize a workshop to engage with engineers on the field: for instance developments on continuous commissioning
  • Automate the verification process (that could be integrated into the existing tools)
