Description:

How about unifying the format in the docs folder to .md Markdown? Currently there are .rst and .md files.

Hi folks - I took a first pass at a few of the documents. Let me know if that's what you were thinking and I can continue or abandon ship.

@dstipp: it looks great at a glance. Would you be able to make a Pull Request for your changes, so that it's easier for us to review?

It's probably best not to wait for all of the documents to be done: it's much easier for us to handle smaller PRs, and we can get value from your work sooner that way.

@richvdh Finally got back to this, and PR #6040 is up. I wish I saw your note before starting up again. We may have to split this, it's kind of big. There's still another pass required for docs/admin_api and the docs outside the docs directory, such as INSTALL, UPGRADE, etc. I'm not sure what to do with docs/sphinx.

I found it easier to review locally when I 'browsed files' at the commit hash to have github render the files.

I expect this will take a couple passes to review...

FWIW, docs/sphinx needs to stay rST because sphinx is specifically rST unless we were to enable some plugins or something.

thanks @dstipp for all the work you did here; I've gone ahead and merged #6040.

One concern with this is that we will be breaking external links to the existing files, and before going any further with this, I'd like to ask what problem we are actually trying to solve here? What is so bad about the files being in RST that it is worth spending hours translating them to markdown and breaking any external links to the repository?

Honestly with this one I'm not certain. I figured if an issue was open it was fair game...

More specifically, I wanted to get involved after setting up synapse and this was a task on the list that'd let me read all the docs and contribute at the same time.
